Halmond Mire Character in Mythrite | World Anvil

Halmond Mire

Halmond is a 25 year old human who made his way to Mythrite as a young adult. He lives in the waterfront district alone, with dreams of making his mark on the city by becoming a notorious thief.   Halmond was born into moderate poverty in Waterdeep. Both of his parents were fishers who were barely able to support themselves and their only child with their meager wages. From a young age, Halmond learned that his place in the world was looked down upon by many of the upper-class, and ignored by others in the same vein of poverty and hardship in the working class. His parents didn't cope with their lives well and often spent their evenings staying up long past dusk at the local tavern, drinking their sorrows away with what little money they could afford to spend. Young Halmond, without friends and wishing not to be alone, took to spending his days exploring the area around his small village and making his own fun. Most days he would practice moving through the forest without making a sound, walking around and watching day to day life in the streets, as well as finding any variety of odd jobs from the town's residents to make a little money to help his parents with their debts. But overall, he was really just honing his skill for stealth. He found that with his shorter stature he was able to blend into crowds easily and stay out of sight while hiding behind objects and corners. He found it fun to see how much day-to-day life he could observe while being looked over by the world. He did not initially channel his newfound skills toward thievery, however. It was not until he met a local elder who lived his life before Waterdeep as a thief, that Halmond started down the path of becoming one himself. He spent the next few years training under the elder and bringing him back stolen goods to sell to fences from out of town. Due to the lackluster attention he received from his parents, the elder became more of a father figure, someone he looked up to and admired. However, those days were not to last, as the elder died when Halmond was 16. It was at that point he left Waterdeep altogether and started a nomadic-lifestyle for several years, going around to various towns and villages doing odd jobs as he did as a child.   Halmond came to Mythrite only months after the city was founded. He heard many tales from travelers on their way to the city, lending claims that anyone to made their way there was sure to make a fortune of some kind working there. Enthralled by these rumors, at the age of 24, Halmond packed up what little possessions he had and made the trek to the city, where he immediately realized that life was not to be so simple as it was made out to be. Unable to buy property, he searched along the waterfront district until he found an unfinished storage house with some decaying boats being held in it. After staying out of sight and scouting the place out, he determined that no one was going to claim the building and started on making it his home for the meanwhile. During the day he would venture out into the streets to do what he did best, observe the citizens of Mythrite going about their business. At night, he would spend his time working at a local tavern, The Thirsty Coin, serving drinks to the run-down working-class citizens of Mythrite. Several citizens have said that while walking around in the market district, they can spot a shadow hiding behind the corner of an alleyway, or behind some crates of fish. However, upon investigating, the shadow disappears, leaving behind no trace of anyone.   Six months after starting his new life in Mythrite, Halmond decided to buy a small house further in the waterfront district, making his residence in the area official and legal. However, his progress in becoming a thieving pro is not going as well as he had hoped it would. While making modest gains day to day stealing odds and ends to fence to the local thieves guild, the Dexterous Palms, he has some outstanding debts to some bigger thieves in the area who belong to the guild. Thus, for every item Halmond fences, a majority of his return is kept for the guild, making it a challenge to keep himself afloat.   Halmond is a well known member of the community, however, despite his social prowess, he is not a man of many friends. Growing up with the kind of life he did, friends were a luxury that he either couldn't or didn't want to afford. Friends in his line of work can be tricky, and rumor has it that he's been burned before, but that rumor also states that he took swift action against the guilty party, whoever it was. Having that kind of duality separates the public opinion on Halmond, some viewing him as an affable person and a respected member of Mythrite, and others who know of his shady nature who claim that he is a man not to be trusted. No one can accuse him of any wrongdoing, as he has not been seen indulging in any criminal activities directly.

History

“One night I was having a drink with a friend and business partner of mine, Dulrik Bronzehammer. We left and parted ways at an intersection right outside the tavern. The night was foggy and eerily silent. After sometime walking alone, I felt a presence watching me. I spun around with a start, and to my surprise nothing was there. A voice spoke out behind me:     ‘So are you really here to make riches off the mithril of this town? Or are you going about another route you con-man? I recommend that you stay on one side of the other, as one of those sides isn’t as gregarious as the other.’   A hooded figure stepped passed me and clapped a small cloth into my chest. I stumbled grabbing for it as it fell to the ground. A three pronged symbol was inked onto the cloth. The next day I asked around and no one knew the symbol. However, that hooded figure was rumored to thief who was looking to increase his network and appeared only to those who threatened his business prospects. I felt better about the encounter then, if I was threatening his business, then I was doing something right.”
