Dwarf

Generally accepted as the second sapient species to arise on Mithlonde, Dwarves are short and stocky, with skin and hair in various earth tones. It's not known if Dwarves are a surface species adapted for life underground, or vice versa. In either case their greatest settlements existed at the borders of the two realms. Kilometers of tunnels and caverns, excavated with advanced steam tools and covered with exceptional engravings, connected to mountainous surface towns. Such were the homes of the Dwarves before the Sarkhani.
So stubborn were the Dwarves in their defense of their homes that when they were finally conquered by the humans they were forced from their homes and scattered across the empire, their culture and language all but lost. And scattered they would remain even after the fall of the Sarkhani until the founders of Urswick would find and reclaim a lost hold, largely sheltered from the worst of the Cataclysm. The rediscovery of forgotten technology, history, culture, and language is a beacon of hope for the beleaguered people.
