This is the continuation of Session 405 – The Cult of the Imprisoned Sea God.
The heroes have investigated the murder of Sir Patrin Memkele, the bailiff of Eryna Manor, and the Peonian Priest, Father Seiros. The evil perpetrators were heretical cultists worshiping the Imprisoned Sea God Eder.
The cultists have placed some curse over the nearby bay, calling all manner of evil sea creatures and ruining the fishing, at least to those who do not pay tribute to Eder. The curse has been broken, although the powerful magic backlash releases a massive, short-lived storm that ravages the nearby settlements and bay. Now, the heroes must deal with the cultists and heretics.
Location - Ederyn Hamlet in the Kingdom of Kanday.
Part 1 – Inquisition
Odin sends a message to Lord Weslin Mankele of Aleura Manor, the liege lord of Eryna Manor and Ederyn Hamlet. Sir Weslin arrives shortly after, and Odin reports recent events, especially explaining the cult of Eder and why his brother was murdered. The heroes have captured half a dozen cultists who may have been responsible for the murders of his brother and Father Seiros. At the very least they are accessories to the crimes. Sir Weslin asks Odin to interrogate the captives and route out more Eder cultists in Eryna Manor and Ederyn Hamlet.Odin, a knight of the holy Order of the Checkered Shield, sets about a small inquisition. Most of the prisoners profess guilt for the murders, and after suitable confessions made to Peoni, the goddess of peace and forgiveness, Sir Weslin approves their execution. However, after days of questioning, threatening, cohesion, and some gossiping, the heroes learn that many of the local villagers, some 48 of the 212, seem to have some reverence for Eder. Happily, most confess and beg for absolution. Although not culpable for murder, Sir Weslin is disgusted by the heretics and makes their feudal obligations far more severe and strict. He will return to the original agreements when he is sure they have genuinely atoned.
Sir Weslin is impressed by Odin's efficiency, and after consulting with his liege lord, Sir Rand Milaka, who knows Odin well, asks the knight if he would be willing to become the bailiff of Eryna Manor and Ederyn Hamlet. Odin considers this opportunity and, after a week, agrees. As a reward for his uncovering heresy and solving the murder of his brother, Odin is also given the bastard sword Ironheart Sir Weslin had commissioned for his brother.
Part 2 – The Rosemary
As Odin finishes his inquisition, a mysterious man wanders into Eryna village. Remy recognizes him as Silas, a member of the Aleathian thieves guild. Remy dealt with him during his smuggling days.
Silas tells Remy an opportunity has come up. The recent storm wrecked the Rosemary, and a merchantman spotted the unfortunate shipwreck. The goods can be salvaged legally, but the guild has contraband hidden in barrels of high-quality thardic salt. These drugs are legal in Kanday but proscribed in the Rosemary's destination, the Kingdom of Melderyn. The guild will pay Remy well if he recovers the illicit goods and is happy for his friends to salvage the legitimate goods legally. Unfortunately, the local guild is being challenged by a foreign criminal organization called the Spiders and needs Remy's help as they can't afford the resources to search the wreck themselves. He explains that the illicit goods were discovered in a warehouse in Aleath, previously occupied by the Spider gang. He smugly explains that the guild "Tricked a pair of dim-witted fools into disposing of the spiders, and all we had to do was clean up the mess." Refer to Session 399 - Exiles for the bloody events. The heroes travel along the storm-wracked coast to Tate Point and spot the wreck.
Part 3 – Wreck
The wreck of the Rosemary is one-third submerged in water and surrounded by debris and floating barrels. It appears deserted. As the plunderers clamber aboard they hear a noise; something is moving in fo'c'sle and the cargo hold. Monstrous looters have arrived first.
Suddenly bursting out of the hold, an enormous troll appears with two heads, one of which appears drunk. The giant troll swings his clubs with wild abandon, smashing into the heroes and proving to be a cunning tactician, nearly killing Edelina as she tries to Heal the wounded. The heroes maneuver around the giant, and Odin is unfortunately near fo'c'sle as two more trolls emerge. These are smaller than usual, with webbed claws and feet. The battle is hard, made far more difficult by the troll's rapid healing. Abaddon changes tactics, attacking with a Produce Flame, followed by strikes with his enchanted spear. This slows the rate at which the monsters regenerate, and he eventually finishes off the two smaller aberrations. The two-headed troll is much more dangerous, shrugging off most injuries but is eventually worn down, and a superb series of strikes by Abaddon and Remy knocks it to the deck. Odin rushes forward with a flaming torch, destroying the massive ivashu.
The cabins are waterlogged and contain a trio of strange octopi-like monstrosities, but they are no serious challenge.
Part 4 – The Spiders
The heroes start salvaging the merchandise from the wreck and, after a day, amass a significant quantity of goods. They will need a wagon or ship to move it. However, a band of thieves from the rival Spiders organization has tracked down the wreck. The gang has three dangerous thugs, a skilled backstabber, and an angry-looking woman with a wealth of alchemical bombs. The legitimate salvagers see them coming and prepare an ambush.
As the Spiders climb onto the wreck, the ambushers pounce. Odin appears from the shadows, catching one thug by surprise, but slips on a patch of troll blood and botches his attack. Remy has better luck blasting another with conjured steel rods, all of which hit another thug in his vulnerable spots, skewering his vital organs and instantly killing him. Abaddon transforms into a giant snake, biting at another thug. Odin redeems himself, walloping one thug. He is knocked off the deck, landing prone on the beach, and quickly killed by Abaddon.
Then things turn for the worse. Remy is incapacitated by a fiendishly well-time stab at the back by the thief. Then, the alchemist quickly combines recipes and makes a truly dangerous bomb. She lobs it at Abaddon, smacking him in the head and knocking him out in an explosion of frost and slime.
As Edelina rushes to heal the downed heroes, Odin cuts down one thug and turns Invisible. Edelina restores Abaddon to consciousness, and as the thief approaches to finish him off, Odin, appearing from nowhere, quickly curts his head off. The panicking alchemist lobs a few more hastily prepared bombs, which miss and is slain without mercy.
To be continued.
