Part 1- The Artificer

Jolanta intends to have a specific magic item created. Using the petrified eyeball of a vicious monster, she wants it converted into a piece of jewelry that will enable her to sense the heat signatures. This should be useful in her quest to hunt down renegade spellcasters, creatures from other worlds, and magical aberrations.

However, until now, there have been no skilled artificers at the local guild of Arcane Lore. Antolim Nephlim, a wizard from the distant Kingdom of Sorkyne, has arrived in the city and is more than willing to help. He will craft Jolanta her trinket but wants something in return, Saint Rebiak's Staff. Saint Rebiak was a former arcanist who eventually took up the cloth, joining the church of Peoni as a missionary to the Taelda barbarians. However, her first mission was savagely interrupted by an Orc incursion. She was murdered and her renowned staff looted.

Recently Antolim has learned that the dwarves have recovered the artifact, and it is currently in the possession of the commander of Zerhun Fortress, Crown Prince Khazar Tarazakh. Antolim asks Jolanta to travel to the dwarven kingdom and purchase this item for him, he gives Jolantas two large rubies as payment.

Location - Silver Way Trade Route, Kingdom of Azadmere.

Part 2 - A Dangerous Road

The Silver Way Trade Route is known for its dangers. A huge Wyvern attacks the travelers, but it is unprepared for Blaine's sharp sword and Jolanta's magical artillery.

A devious Orc ambush proves to be much more hazardous. Blaine stumbles into a spiked pit trap, and the duo is mobbed. Jolanta has to temporarily retreat, leaving Blaine to fight valiantly before she can gain enough distance to unleash a magical barrage. Blaine is badly battered and bruised, and this ordeal adds to his growing dislike of Orcs. He collects a couple of Orc heads. He believes that he will be given a warm welcome if he delivers them to the dwarves.

Part 3 - At the Fortress

The duo arrives at the impressive dwarven Fortress of Zerhun. They are closely observed as they enter, and dozens of hidden weapons are likely aimed at them. The grumpy dwarf guard at the gate does not allow the characters through but does crack a brief smile when Blaine shows him the foulspawn heads. They are instructed to wait then an hour later escorted under guard to meet with the fortress's commander, Crown Prince Khazar Tarazakh. He will decide the character's fortune.

The pair meet with Prince Khazar in a small conference room deep in the fortress. The down-to-business Prince does not respond well to the character's clumsy generalities. He is astute enough to identify Jolanta as a wizard, and she suspects he may be very well informed about magic and the nearby human kingdoms.

Jolanta offers to purchase Saint Rebiak's Staff from him, presenting the gems. While he is considering her offer, there is a commotion. A guard soon arrives whispers something in his ear. He quickly excuses himself leaving the characters are still under the watchful eye of a sentry. Blaine tries to impress him with his orc killing stories and show him his sword Orc Bleeder, a weapon made by a famous dwarven weaponsmith. The stoic guard is far from impressed, neither is he particularly interested in chatting about alcohol. Jolanta politely tells Blaine to shut up.

Prince Khazar returns shortly after, somewhat troubled. Four of his guards have been found unconscious. They have been assaulted by what appears to be some form of mental attack. After a brief investigation, the prince has learned that a young dwarven girl, Grofearen, was recently given a strange green crystal by her scholar father. This crystal is likely of earthmasters origin and had a most unexpected effect. She seems to have spontaneously manifested great psionic power; however, is unable to control it. She has run off into some of the older passages of the fortress.

As Jolanta is a skilled arcanist, he asked her to help the girl and prevent any bloodshed.

Part 4 - Load Thoughts

The duo makes their way along the underground passages, turns a corner, and runs into a dwarven warrior. Heavily armored and wielding a magnificent greatsword, he attacks Blaine with a series of well-placed strikes. He is disorientated and confused; nevertheless, he is more than a match for Blaine, so Jolanta uses her magic to help knock him unconscious.

Shortly after the pair enter a strange area crackling with psionic energy, two invisible forms emerge and attack. Jolanta believes these are some form of Psionic Manifestations. They are quickly dispersed.

In the next chamber, they spot a dwarven girl, confused, in distress, and what appears to be a trance, surrounded by a field of the now-familiar psionic energy. She is clutching a green crystal. As the characters approach closer, she notices them and manifests her fears. What looks like semi-transparent Orcs, at least a child's expectation of what orcs look like, appear. Jolanta and Blaine find they "die" quickly enough. Scared, the girl conjures a huge, almost comical manifestation of a giant spider, and although not being real, it overwhelms the simple-minded Blaine. He falls to the floor unconscious. Jolanta focuses her magic, targeting the green crystal. Her energy bolt knocks the crystal out of the girls' hands. She screams, falls unconscious, and the psionic shenanigans immediately stop.

Jolanta collects the earthmaster crystal and calls for help.

The Prince is appreciative of Jolanta's action. No one has died, and the unconscious guards and girl make a full recovery. Jolanta briefly studies the earthmaster crystal before handing it over to the Prince. It can potentially awaken and enhance psionic talent, and the girl Grofearen is something of a psionic prodigy. Because she has no training, she could not contain her previous latent powers. Jolanta suggests that the guild of arcane lore in the Kingdom of Melderyn could train her, but the Prince says it will be decided later.

The Prince agrees to sell the Staff of Saint Rebiak's to Jolanta and the characters are welcome to stay in the nearby villages as long as they like.

To be continued.
