Lothrim the Foulspawner Character in Misty Isle of Harn | World Anvil

Lothrim the Foulspawner

Lothrim (a.k.a. The Foulspawner)

Lothrim was a man of learning, most likely a renegade Mage from the Kingdom of Melderyn.

He became the War Chieftain of the Chelni and Tulwyn barbarian tribes founding first a kingdom them an empire stretching between the rivers Thard in the west and Kald in the east. His initial success is widely believed due to his use of the magical arts. He made Elkall-Anuz, an Earthmasters site, the capital of his Empire.

After much study, he soon became obsessed with the Earthmasters and believed they employed a race of humanoid soldier-slaves. With his barbarian subjects severely depleted by constant wars, he created or imported a fast-breeding, short-lived, violent, rebellious, and quarrelsome race called Gargun or the Orc. He undertook a reign of terror against the surrounding tribes and nations now known as the Tyranny of the Foulspawner.

In his constant quest for artifacts of the Earthmasters, Lothrim heard of a book, Penultimate Tome, in possession of the Dwarven King of Kiraz. It was said to contain the great secrets of the Ancients.

He became obsessed with the book and marched his Orc army on a long and dangerous trek to the mountain fortress of Kiraz. Luckily the fortress was lightly defended as most of the city's warriors had recently departed to gather food before the onset of winter. The city was overrun with complete surprise, aided by magic, and every Dwarf was brutally slain and most eaten.

Lothrim recovered an ancient tome in a strange script and decided to return to his capital. The outraged Dwarven warriors ambushed and routed his army in a massive battle near Sirion. He was captured and cast into a chamber carved into Mt Anegif alive, with his precious book and an "honor guard" of a dozen starving Orcs. The location of "Lothrim's Tomb" remains a subject of speculation and treasure hunters.

Without Lothrim's charisma and magical power, his Empire collapsed into dozens of petty kingdoms ruled by Warlords. His tribal subjects returned to their old ways but were much warier of those practicing magic while his Orcs spread worldwide.
