Warantia Settlement in Mirateia | World Anvil

Warantia

Nestled along a pristine coastline along the eastern coastline of the Empire of Dercia lies the ancient harbour city Warantia. The city has managed to stay not only inhabited but also maintain its prominent role in the eastern trade network, being situated at the convergence of several maritime trade routes, despite several attempts by time to change these facts.   The city's origins can be traced back to antiquity. According to the city's legend, some of the first people settled the place to settle the Dercian region. Scholars have found archaeological sites that seem to support this story, as some of the oldest ruins found can be dated back several thousand years, possibly even making the city older than Pearlhal.

Government

The city is governed by council of merchants but is lead by the governor.

Defences

The city is defended by an impressive wall that protect the city from the landside and likewise the city is defended by a large squadon of warships.

Industry & Trade

The harbour is the lifeblood of the city and is bustling with activity, one can find ships of varying sizes and designs from all over Mirateia, filling the port with their colourful flags and sails.

History

The city has, throughout the centuries, witnessed the rise and fall of several kingdoms and small empires who have all claimed ownership of the city when the Ancient Empire came to the Dercian region in its conquest of the last region of the continent, the city was one of the first cities to swear loyalty to the new and powerful empire. This act would almost prove fatal for the city around 250 years later when the Ancient Empire fell and collapsed. The cities that had suffered under the empire's rule and had been some of the first to rise against it came to the city and raided it. The attack on the city resulted in a large fire that engulfed most of the city, but the city survived and was able to rebuild.

Architecture

Each passing power that had controlled the city has left an indelible imprint on the city's architecture. In the older parts of the city, one could find styles that were the forerunners for some of the styles currently present in the Empire of Dercia.   Visiting the city one can find narrow alleyways that wind their way through the city, which leads to hidden courtyards, taverns, and bustling market squares. Local artisans display their wares in open-air stalls, offering fine textiles, and vibrant artworks that capture the essence of the city's ancient heritage.

I love that the city is so rich with history. I like that several empires and kingdoms have claimed it over the years, and therefore it has layers to the architecture.
