Patha-style sword

The Patha is the standard type of sword equipped by the Dercian Legions There exist two main versions of the sword, the one for the heavy infantry of the legions has a long point, making it useful for both slashing and stabbing the enemy, while the other version are intended for the cavalry and have a more rounded tip, ensuring that the ridder dont accidently stab their own foot or their horse. The length of the blade ensures that both the infantry and cavalry have a good reach for fighting.
The blades are made using a type of welding known as pattern welding that strengthens the core of the blade. There are also incorporated between one and two fullers that give the Patha a strong but lightweight blade. The handles of the swords are typically made out of wood or bone and then wrapped in leather. It's not uncommon for the officers of the legions to decorate their swords with a bronze or silver grip sleeve
The Patha-style sword is from the Caurentia region originally, and the people of the region were already using this style of sword when they Crienia made contact with them, and after fighting several battles between local forces and the incoming legions from Pearlhal, the Crienia began to integrate the swords into their own army, at first it was only the cavalry that recrieved the sword but some centuries later, the sword began to become common among the infantry as well. While the shape and pattern of the original blade have been, for the most part, maintained, the Crienic version grew from 60-70 centimeters for the blade, into the 80 centimeters to 1 meter for the modern pattern.

Manufacturing process

The production of the Patha requires extensive craftsmanship and could take up to several days. It would begin with the blacksmith forging the basic shape of the blade from several layers of steel that were then repeatedly folded. Welding would create a pattern that was not only decorative and sought after but also increased the stability of the blade. Following their initial forging, the heat treatment of the blade would follow. First, the blade would be hardened and then tempered. The finishing blade would then receive the stamp of the blacksmith who had made it.

Raw materials & Components

The blades were created through a multi-stage process, where blacksmiths would take different types of steel with varying amounts of carbon content and then weld them together. This method ensured that the blade had a good balance between hardness and flexibility.
The core of the blade would consist of softer iron with an outer shell of hard steel along the edges.
