Kalavi fires

The Kalavi fires are crucial in the communication and warning system in the Empire of Dercia. And while the Kalavi fires are technically no different from the other signalfires used outside the Empire, they have become known as Kalavi fires in the Empire after they with their signatory coloured smoke were used to defend a small coastal realm and afterwards people travelled all over the Dercian region telling how the fires of Kalavi had saved the realm and soon after people started to refer to their signal fires as the Kalavi fires.
The fires are typically placed on high grounds like hilltops but can also be placed on floating platforms.
A watchman and their family typically guard each Kalavi fire, and their role is to maintain the fire, ensuring it's always ready to be lit and keeping an eye out for smoke that might come from the direction of the other watchtowers. Each watchman would have some special powder in their stations that could be put on the fire, creating different colours of smoke that would signal specific messages depending on the colour. 
While magic is present in the Empire, its very rare and spells like Spell of sending are not always the most useful as it would be wasteful to place valuable magic users all over the coast with the single purpose of sending a spell should the need arise. Likewise, the smoke from the Kalavi fires can also be seen over a wider distance, so not only could they be used to transport a message to the right people, but they could also be used to warn the surrounding villages and towns and get the civilians to safety.

Access & Availability

The Kalavi fires are commonly found along the coastal shores of the Empire of Dercia.

Colours and their meaning:

• Blue: Hurricanes.
• Red: Enemies, either pirates or foreign states.
• Green: Farming trouble, like blights.
