Excel

A city that derives its continued existence from farming in the main and its interaction with the natural environment in general: being taken from its original location, given sanctuary for a span of more than just time and then positioned at the tip of an unnamed inlet on Lake Ranble on Miranse. Excel’s next few years will be telling. Is this just a brief stay of execution or will it flourish in a new land?

Government

The city has never had a government. Rules were applied in accord with the wishes of the city-state that controlled Excel at arm’s length. Routine matters have been handled by the mayor’s office. This position is paid for by a small tax on locally mined ores.   Current mayor: Goodtock   He controls the deployment of funds collected by the town guard at gate entries, mined resources at the assay office and the sale of market produce.

Defences

A town of its size wouldn’t normally have such a well built stone wall. Prescient former citizens saw the need as their city stood along e against the wilderness areas of its previous location. With monsters ranging around their city, it was the only sensible plan despite the expense. The hand of another race other than Humanity can be seen here and there, although the bulk of the work was done by townspeople. This touch of ‘the other’ has done something to keep the wall in such good condition. It’s beleieved that these non-humans created, in the foundations especially, greater strength than Men could achieve.   A wall by itself is no more than a minor inconvenience. The defenders of the city are insufficient to mount much beyond a simple holding defence. The barracks are well built but are at 30% capacity. The training of these men could be better but they are considered average for Mundane Ranked individuals.

Infrastructure

Given its dramatic upheaval, there will be a lot to do to put Excel firmly back on the map!

Assets

Town assets are difficult to quantify. The lands around it may have wealth to offer or not. It’s too soon to know whether the land nearby can be farmed and what the yields might be. The farmers may need some time to learn the climate and what types of things can be grown. Excel will need more knowledge from original inhabitants to determine a sensible course.   As funds will be quickly depleted, a measure to generate new sources of wealth is vital in the short term.

Guilds and Factions

A result of the ‘transference’ is that there are remnant pieces of various organisations. These amount to a handful of individuals. These may wither away without support and need for their roles in thisbnew land. However, some may be able to survive. It’s too early to say in most cases as this will depend on the individuals involved and their plans.

History

Where to begin for a place which has its origins at such a time as Excel was founded in... A distant outlying place on the edge of a great city-state's influence, Excel began and remained for much of its existence, a last chance to obtain stock. Those who set their eyes upon travel into lands filled with unknown dangers came to the town. Only some would return. Those that did found its low, broad walls a welcome sight after weeks or months in the hinterlands of Nicversentel. Not a few of these adventurers were likely to stay in Excel. It made sense if their movements were back and forth into the dangerous and profitable land around the place. Over the years and over the ages Excel served as an island of security on the sea of perilous adventures.     All that was in the Old Realm. That realm is no more. It was washed away by a great confluence set into motion by forces that probably knew nothing of an insignificant town like Excel. Nonetheless, when all was destroyed and merest fractions might be found, only with great effort, Excel remained. Never was it more like an isle of security than at that moment.

Architecture

The city has a mixture of stone and wooden buildings in a 70/30 ratio. Roofs are tiled with slates almost exclusively. There are three major buildings: the mayor’s offices and home, and two ‘temples’. One has been converted into a ambassadorial residence. The other is currently used by six members of the Pharoanix Guard.

Geography

The key terrain feature of the town is the inlet leading to Lake Ranble. This will be a useful thing, serving as both food source and transportation conduit. The area around the town is flat and suitable for farming or building. . .
