History

The Heraldic College   Formed in the region that would become the nation of Iascter, the Heraldic College or Heralds, began in a small manner and grew to great stature only to lose most of their prominence and subsequently regain much of this same importance.     At the outset, there was no college. There was only a scattered set of individuals whose purpose was far from the place they were to command in society. These people shared three skills in; numeracy, in artistry and historical research. These skills developed, in the main, within the boundaries of the city of Mymoor. Initially, these were employed to number and catalogue the buildings and houses of the city. Personal homes and small businesses saw their addresses codified as well as receiving illuminated numbers to identify each, made public by square flags that hung above each doorway. Important buildings and intersections were presented with more of these elaborate ‘signals’, abbreviated to ‘signs’ in common parlance, which hung above entrances and over street corners. Recording the various signals’ details took some effort to keep orderly. As well, some signals were seen to be the same, causing confusion and embarrassment to the scribes involved. Public admiration for the idea collided with derision and doubt as to this disorganised collection of ‘professionals’.     Calanter Vesson, led the move to gathering the disparate ‘signallers’ into a combined organisation. Several potential names were considered; chiefly ‘Signalmen’, ‘Positers’ and “Heralds’. Each described an aspect of the groups purpose. In the end ‘Heralds’ won its place as the new organisation’s name. Chosen as it described the manner that the groups signals announced those streets’ and structures’ purposes and locations, in notable fashion. Calenter also became the Heralds first leader, ‘Chief Pennant’.     The combined efforts of the new Heraldic organisation saw immediate results. The orderliness of streets and clarity of business designations created an efficiency not seen elsewhere. Iascter saw its standing grow among the regions of Coaseth. Efficiencies and the sophisticated yet simple process of naming the assets of its cities and towns soon came to be admired and requested. Members of the Heralds ventured outward from the region to ply their skills in the rest of Coaseth. In the next decades these initial excursions became established footholds and these followed the example of the original organisation in Mymoor and created the Colleges of Heralds. These were the bases for Heraldic training, researches and codification of records.     In a later Age, the colleges would be destroyed as they had too much association with the monarchs of that period. Following the dissolution of all the colleges except the Heralds founding College in Mymoor, there was a span of time that saw the Heralds retire from view. Their resurgence was relatively swift. This was due primarily to the incorporation of Colour into the organisation. As the Heralds took to the White, they also took once more to the greater world. They still performed their honoured role but they now had added exactness and perception in their structuring of those places and since the Age of the Houselands Kings, persons they recorded and positioned.     As they succeeded, they grew more prosperous and influential. The rise of the new nation-states saw a great demand for their skills in establishing positions and insuring that all were in accord with other nations’ designs. The Heralds were often disturbed by the senseless loss of life and property. As well, they were mindful of their losses in the Time of Condemnation. They sought to turn nations away from warlike stances. Matters would eventually be resolved with the culmination of the Southloss War. At its conclusion, the Heralds were able to gather enough support from the nations to bring about the Pacts of Peace and the Articles of War. This was the period where the Heralds formed a lasting treaty with both the Warlogues of Iorinth and the Airthane of Jercis. Together these three groups would form a bulwark against any ideas of conflct.
