The Luton Wastes

Geography

When it was a living city, Luton was situated in a break in the middle of a range of hills known as the Chilterns. However, after the bomb went off, the Wastes became more of a wide valley thanks to the impact of the blast. Interestingly, the valley is not centred on the ruins of the town, a side effect of the bombing being an accident. A river, the Lea, runs through the region, but as it passes through the water becomes toxic to most life-forms.

Ecosystem

As far as most people are concerned, there is no ecosystem to speak of within the wastes, due to everything being absolutely destroyed. However, this is a misconception. In 2153, a survey was conducted of the area, and small patches of a variant of Dwarf Ryegrass with a resistance to damage from radiation were discovered. This grass has since become known as Waste Ryegrass.

Localized Phenomena

Due to the relative lack of transpiration, thanks to the very small amount of plants that are able to survive in the Wastes, the water cycle in the region is messed up. As such, the Luton Wastes could quite possibly be considered a dry region of England, despite the fact that that phrase is an oxymoron. In general, the area has a rain cycle similar to that of Texas in the early 21st century - virtually nonexistent.

History

The Luton Wastes were once the British airport city known as Luton. However, due to an unfortunate misfire of a UK nuclear weapon in 2086, the city was obliterated, and the surrounding area wiped out almost entirely. It is still off-limits to this day, simply because of how inhospitable it has become. However, there are unconfirmed rumours that the descendants of the survivors of the initial blast are living there, dubbed ‘Lutonfolk’ by conspiracy theorists.
