Goblin Fire Session 27

General Summary

The Party awoke in the Lonesome Sword Inn in the town of Greyhelm the following day. As they ate breakfast downstairs, they were met by a runner wearing the normal Clan Hammersmith colors. He approached the group and introduced himself as Horrak and informed them that Yoldrick Shatterbasher was expecting them in his office inside the fortress. They finished up their food and followed the young messenger to Shatterbasher's room.   The office was large, with bare stone jutting out from the walls juxtaposed with finished edifices. Despite this, it was surprisingly warm and Shatterbasher appreciated the raw and natural look of the unfinished room. A large oak table rested in the middle of the room covered in documents and maps. Shatterbasher stood up when the group entered the room and bade them to come gather around the table. He informed the group that they were able to verify what the Party had told him about Ovrul Rend's camp, but that they had packed up and moved before their scouts arrived. The scouts were able to track his forces to a new location, about 35 miles north of Greyhelm in the Giant Hills. They still had a group of scouts there constantly providing information back to Shatterbasher.   Just then, a grizzled and tired looking scout burst into the room. He was breathing heavily as if he had been running for a long time. He apologized to Shatterbasher for interrupting him, but he had to inform him that the scouting party had been ambushed. Two of them had been taken prisoner but he managed to escape. Shatterbasher took the news with grim resolve. He asked for the Party's help in rescuing his men. He offered up two of his soldiers to assist, and the Party accepted.   Along the way, Sir Didymus decided that he wished to claim another wolf for his animal companion. The group found a partially eaten deer near their path along with multiple sets of wolf paw prints. They were able to successfully track the pack back to a nearby cave. Vigwalin and Sir Didymus entered the cave, with Vigwalin disguised as a wolf. The attempt to lure one out was going according to plan, until Vigwalin decided he'd had enough of the wolf's advances, and he turned back into his regular form. Vigwalin managed to subdue one with his entangle spell and was able to calm the other. Sir Didymus had his wolf.   That evening, as they set up camp, the Party was ambushed by a giant pale beast covered in chitinous armor plating with a massive gaping maw called a bulette. The Party made short work of the single beast, with Bloodbane annihilating it with a swing from his Ravager axe. Sir Didymus collected its chitin, intent on making armor for his wolf later.   The group woke up at dawn and continued their journey to Ovrul Rend's camp site. Along the way, they encountered a woodsman, who they informed of the danger in the area. The woodsman decided to take his family to the Giant Hills Hunters Lodge which was nearby. After a few moments of conversation, he told the Party that the goblin forces generally go out on patrol around lunchtime. The Party appreciated the information and would use that to their advantage.   Once the group arrived at the encampment, which consisted of several tents and a wooden palisade, Typhon summoned his familiar, the owl Hootie, to scout the immediate area. Hootie located the two dwarf scouts which had been locked up inside the palisade and were being guarded by three goblins and a bugbear. They decided that the two dwarf soldiers would act as a distraction in case Rend and his forces returned, while the rest of the Party would enter the palisade and rescue the dwarves.   The plan went off without a hitch, as the Party was able to sneak through the encampment without being detected. Typhon cast magehand to open the door and the group slaughtered the guards, thus freeing the prisoners. As soon as they had done so, however, they heard a clapping sound coming from outside. A voice then boomed out from the treeline. It was Ovrul Rend congratulating the Party on their harrowing rescue. The Party was trapped, with only one way and one way out...
