Battle of the Five Hills

The Battle of the Five Hills was an early battle in the war between The Iron Confederacy and the Rugalla Dynasty. The battle took place on 17 Uhr, 1423, about two weeks after the start of the war. It was a narrow victory for the reeling Rugallan forces, thanks in part to their denial of the high ground.

The Conflict

Prelude

On 12 Uhr, 1423, Iron Confederacy forces entered the area and took control over the towns of Heartlight and Stillhaven. By 13 Uhr, they had taken control of the Causabridge Cliff, which gave them a commanding view of the area. The same day, they moved down to the northern bank of the Magepost ford and had begun sending scouts into the town.   On 14 Uhr, Rugallan forces arrived and set up camp on the Cambalt Hills overlooking the Wesbron-Ottermar river junction. Over the course of the next few days, additional forces joined them, creating a rallying point for Rugallan forces arriving from other theaters.

Battlefield

Battle of the Five Hills cover

The battle took place on and around the Wesbron-Ottermar river junction. Combat occurred in and near the towns of Magepost and Maplepass. The gently rolling hills provided key terrain, including the Rugallan headquarters on the Cambalt Hills, and the Iron Confederacy headquarters in Heartsville.

The Engagement

Irregular forces under the command of the warlock Tormento and the warrior Morglum Necksnapper disrupted Iron Confederacy scouting operations in the town of Magepost in the morning. They then crossed the river at the Magepost ford where they were forced to fight uphill against a troop of Iron Confederacy axe infantry as well as one of their battle mages. The forces continued northwest until they reached their objective: Causabridge Cliff. There, they faced the Iron Confederacy commander, Kilvar Brazzik, where he led a troop of axe infantry and crossbowdwarves. The Rugallan forces capitalized on their momentum and quickly swept aside the opposition.   At roughly noon, a group of Iron Confederacy battle mages and dwarven pikemen using the breathe water spell, crossed the Wesbron River and took control of the Trisano Bluffs for a short time. The pikemen set up a defensive perimeter, while the battle mages began assaulting the town using a combination of fire balls and ice storms. They remained unchallenged, until a group of Rugallan cavalry removed them from the battlefield at great loss to themselves.

Outcome

Iron Confederacy forces were forced to redirect forces to attempt to reclaim, unsuccessfully, the elevated position, thus delaying the deployment of catapults and trebuchets.

Aftermath

Iron Confederacy efforts to set up a launch pad for further operations into the river valley were severely hampered and their timetables were disrupted.
