Technician
A technician is a worker profession involved in the operation of power stations and generation of energy credits. The term 'technician' can refer to any profession involving a large body of technical skill and knowledge, but in common common parlance the term typically refers to energy technicians. Technicians are responsible for maintaining and operating power stations and associated energy infrastructure, making them critical in modern energy-hungry socities. This involves monitoring energy levels, performing maintenance and repair work, routing energy where it is needed most, troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment, and responding to emergencies whenever they appear.
Most modern planet-based power plants throughout the galaxy run on renewable energy sources. These include wind turbines, hydroelectric dams, geothermal plants, and most often, solar power. Renewable energy is supplemented by reactors, ranging from old nuclear fission types, to more modern fusion and antimatter reactors. Most planet-based reactors in the galaxy utilise fusion, as fission and especially antimatter reactors carry great risks should safety features fail. The most modern kind of reactor, zero-point energy, generates power by utilising minute energy differences between realspace and subspace in order to exploit the Casimir effect. New zero-point reactors are most common in the latest generation of military warships, but civilian reactors are being constructed as well. In some parts of space, particularly early colonies, 'dirty' hydrocarbon-based fuels are used to generate power.
