Glebsig
Glebsigi are a species of sapient floating molluscoids that originated on the alpine world of Ladnah. The most readily apparent feature of the Glebsigi is their ability to defy gravity and float a short distance off the ground. This is caused by internal bladders filled with a lighter-than-air gas which the species produces (an internal organ processes food into this gas), allowing it to hover. By expelling this gas through orifices across the body, a Glebsig can propel themselves through the air. However, due to their weight, they cannot hover more than a metre or so off the ground without assistance.
Despite a lack of natural predators on their homeworld, Glebsigi evolved a hardened upper plate roughly analagous to an armadillo from Earth. It is believed this tough yet light shell allowed the ancestors of the Glebsigi to partially burrow themselves into the ground (or lakebed) for hibernation during cold snaps, protecting them from threats during their vulnerable state. Although the adaptation is no longer of particular use from an evolutionary competition standpoint, it is tough enough to protect the top of a Glebsig from simple melee weapons and shrapnel. The bottom of a Glebsig is not as tough, and still as vulnerable as other comparable species.
Glebsigi are known for their optimistic and inquisitive attitude towards life, owing to a lack of natural predators on their homeworld. Despite this, Glebsigi are highly attached to their communities and find it difficult to leave them behind. They come to know their local habitat, caring for it and treating it as an extension of their family. Those Glebsigi that do venture out and explore beyond their immediate surroundings often become celebrities, realising the ideals of their society. The lack of interest in migration among Glebsigi has caused their homeworld of Ladnah to be far more populated than other homeworlds in the galaxy. This also means that Glebsig Foundation colonies have much higher rates of xeno habitation than other societies, something the Glebsigi often view with pride.
