Escort

Escorts are a class of space ship intended for patrol, reconnaissance, and escort duties. They are solely operated by the fallen empires and utilise extremely advanced technology well beyond the means of the majority of the galaxy. While they appear to be similar in size to destroyers, their firepower appears to exceed that of even the best modern cruisers. Not only do they carry significant firepower, but escorts are estimated to be faster and more maneuverable than corvettes - perhaps due to exotic thrusters. Escorts are only found outside fallen empire space during punitive expeditions against those that have upset the stagnant ascendancies. Attempts at reverse-engineering these ships have failed, with current theories suggesting they make use of advanced spacetime manipulation technologies to increase their interior space beyond what physics suggests it should be.

Unlike conventional warships, escorts are arranged in a vertical configuration. This means that all of their firepower is directly forward, with little ability to rotate turrets to face a side or rear threat. However, due to the extreme maneuverability and defensive abilities of escorts, this does not appear to pose any issue for them. All of the different types of fallen empire escort bear extreme design similarities, barring specific weapon loadouts. This suggests either a singular source for their development, or an example of convergent design towards a single optimised warship.
