Legend of the Dream Walkers

Summary

According to a Tovakan myth, both of the moons are gods. Resvaka and Tanajo. Tanajo created a perfect world from dust from the cosmos, and Resvaka created life on it. They called their children the Tovaka. For thousands of years the gods lived among their children and the world was at peace, but one day a terrible creature, the Pezwa, arrived and started to consume their world. Both of the gods tried to fight the beast, but were no match for it. They grabbed the children they could and left into the cosmos. The Pezwa consumed their world and moved onward to another in the fare distance of space.   Resvaka and Tanajo navigated for centuries tiring themselves out, but finally found a world their children could live that had other life and other gods upon it. They were too weak from the trek and couldn't join their children and cast them towards the world. Once they saw their children were safe, the lovers embraced teary eyed and ready for death. In their final moments Resvaka noticed that this world had no moon, much like their old world. So in a final act they turned themselves into the two moons in the sky to keep watch over their children and defend the new world from the Pezwa if it ever arrived.   The Tovaka arrived in the new world and were taken as slaves by one race of monsters, but the monstrous race vanished one day. The people were freed and rejoiced, only for another race, the Dwarves to put them back in shackles and treat them worse than their last masters had. Under the rule of the Dwarves, all religion was banned and anyone who spoke of a god or divine being was killed on the spot. Some Tovaka spoke to their gods in quiet, but many were discovered and paid for it with their lives. Eventually the Tovaka discovered a place where they could commune with their creators, in their dreams.   The Tovaka once again had a way to communicate with their gods and avoid persecution. The gods themselves were slumbering, but spoke to their children in symbols and metaphorical imagery. They would give those who needed it inspiration, or ideas in their sleep, that would aid them when they were awake. Eventually one of the Tovaka was able to directly enter this strange realm the gods had used to communicate with their people, and from there were able to heal and aid their people in their sleep. These people were dubbed the Dream Walkers. A rare gift from the gods, but a welcomed one among the Cell Cities.   One day the gods spoke directly to the dream walkers in a city cell and warned them that they Pezwa was coming back, and that they would keep them safe. Sure enough, that very next evening the sky cracked open and the beast had returned and started to consume the world. The Tovaka huddled together hoping their gods would keep them safe, and then they all fell into a deep sleep. When they had awoken they found the world around them a complete wasteland, but they were still alive and safe. The gods told the Dream Walkers that they had kept them safe, but that the rest of the world was destroyed. They would keep a watch over their children once again, but had to reenter their slumber after the keeping them safe from the Pezwa's destruction.   The Dream Walkers continued to help their people by venturing into the realm of dreams. There they could heal the sick, ease emotional pains, and even in some circumstances see visions of the past and the future.    For many generations since the Dream Walkers have slowly been dwindling off, and there hasn't been a new one in over 100 years. With conditions slowly worsening around them, the Tovaka are worried the gods may have abandoned them. They pray to their gods nightly in the sky hoping they would return to them one day...

The legend really only seems to be known by the Tovaka tribes of Orongo.
