Bucket Item in Melyria | World Anvil

Bucket

Ever since humanoids have had a need to get significant amounts of liquid from one place to another need for a vessel for liquidy transportation has been required. After generations of trial and error, the humble artisans of the world have mastered the art of making these magnificently useful yet awfully underappreciated containers.   Buckets are available in all corners of the world and are usually easily available on any general store. Occasionally, one might even find one with particularly fetching design, like painted in pretty colors or made from better material.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Buckets are often shaped like cylinders, though this may vary. They have an open top and flat bottom and some may come with separate lid. A bucket can be made of wood, metal, leather or even from more exotic materials. The most important factor is, that the container is waterproof so it can perform its function. To make sure of this, the material is treated for the purpose. Not all metals are ideal for buckets, as rust can become a significant problem.   Bucket usually also has a handle to ease carrying. Handle is usually made from metal, wood or even rope. The handle should be sturdy enough that it can carry the weight of the container and whatever is in it.

Significance

Buckets are commonly used to move liquid, most commonly water. Buckets may have indeed been ancestors for pots, barrels, cups, baskets, and cans, revolutionizing the world with their simple yet effective functionality. This day, however, the bucket has become so mundane in the gallery of objects that many do not consider how the humble bucket has eased their life.   Buckets are used, besides moving liquids, as general containers and transportation for things, as well as measurements of quantity (like "bucket full of apples"). Children and sometimes even adults in tricky situations have used buckets as helmets, throwing weapons and stools. It is not unlikely to see a bucket used as bedpan in certain corners of the world, or even as scoops for gathering things.   The bucket is a good companion for any traveler, worker or nobleman alike, but they also save lives. While in more magically savvy areas wizards are capable of dealing with fires, in many places getting a bucket and carrying water the fire site is still the most effective method to deal with such occurrence. They are also useful for fishermen, who put fish in a bucket of water before killing them, so the meat won't spoil before they get to shore.

Silver Buckets

Holy water is a precious resource used in divine ceremonies and repelling undead. Water is often gathered from clean springs to make sure the end result is as potent as possible, but this can require getting it from far away sources.   Naturally, buckets can be used for fetching such water, though they must be specially made for the purpose of the water is not contaminated in the process. Some clerics believe that only buckets made from willow or blessed silver are fit to carry such burden.

Not always mundane

On the regions more magically adept, you might get your hands to an enchanted bucket.   The bucket is typically enchanted to not to spill its contents without holder actually pouring/taking the context out of the bucket willingly. This simple spell has proved particularly useful in work environments where extra caution is advised.
