Jacob Baratheon

Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, Lord of Storm's End (a.k.a. The Last Baratheon, The Hostage)

Personality

Jacob embodies the Baratheon lineage, with his tall, lean frame, black hair, and natural prowess in combat. Yet, beneath his formidable exterior, he is shy in social situations and has a deep interest in books and history. Now, as the last hope for House Baratheon, Jacob faces the immense responsibility of restoring his family's power and legacy in a Westeros that has drastically changed. The traditional Baratheon anger is an ever present friend to him, though he tries to act cold and taciturn after his time spent fending for himself in the Swann Court.

History

Jacob Baratheon was the second son to Lord Kevin Baratheon, half-brother to Juspar Baratheon. Born of a second wife and much younger than his elder brother, there were few expectations of Jacob to ever actually rule. As a child he spent most of his spare time in the castle library, reading the histories and sciences and pestering the family maester. Juspar was often away in Essos, waging war on behalf of the Targaryen King’s, and so Jacob never grew close to his brother.   This lackadaisical childhood would be brought to a brutal end with the beginning of the Great Awakening. Juspar would die at sea near Tyrosh, doubtlessly slaughtered by one of the Queen’s many enemies. By all the laws of Gods and Men Jacob should have become the next Lord Paramount. the Witch of Stonehelm, Ellyria Mopatis, ensorcelled the garrison of Storm’s End and seized it. Jacob was held as a ‘ward’, a hostage in all but name, of the new regime.   Two long years followed, where Jacob was isolated in the court. He was the last remnant of the rightful rulers of the Stormlands, and feared an assassination at any moment. He delved deeper into his studies, and familiarised himself with the servants' passages of Storm’s End. The better to move around beneath the court’s notice.   When King Otho slew Vaegon Targaryen, and liberated the Stormlands, Jacob simply traded one usurper for another. Judged to be “too young” to rule for himself, Jaehaeara Targaryen instead was given charge of his Stormlands as a ‘regent’. She wasn’t content with merely usurping his birthright, and lost the favour of King Otho after several foolish decisions. Finally, at long last, Jacob was allowed to rule his family’s rightful holdings as he came of age.
