Bankrupcy

There's not a lot that puts the fear of god into the Megacorps, but the idea of bankrupcy is one of them. Bankrupcy is a catastrophic financial and/or organizational failure, when the money well has run dry and debts exceed tolerable levels. With nowhere to go, a corporation implodes under its own weight; everything is sold off, executives escape with golden parachutes, workers are laid off and herded out of their office, and all operations cease.

Bankrupcy is as close to death as a corporation will get, but more often than not the name and identity is sold off with any other asset, so maybe it's more like reincarnation.

Corporations are both incredibly resilient and surprisingly fragile at the same time, able to weather severe financial headwinds only to topple over from a bitcoin push. Sometimes, the bankrupcy isn't even anything the corp itself did, but just a domina in a chain of cascading failure that started somewhere up the line. Demand drops for one thing, and everyone from producers to distributers feel the pinch. Investors are skittish beasts, and they move in herds - if one panics over a threat real or imagined, the entire group goes with them, and takes the market with them. It's a system built on instability, and the carrion-corps that benefit from an entire shadow-economy in Megacorpolis.
There are bankrupcies in Megacorpolis every year, each one with the potential to spiral out of control and drag others down with it. The biggest bankrupcy in Megacorpolis history (so far) was bad enough that nukes got involved and created the infamous tourist resort Sector 13.
