Amara's Swamp
Named for an herb often gathered for both its curative and pest repellent properties, Amara's Swamp is fed by the Restless River, which flows out of the southern highlands. Beginning just northeast of Surgeontown, the swamp encompasses the river for a third of its journey toward the Silver Sea. Formed in a basin created by a bowl-like depression between the cliffs of the southern highlands and the midland plains, the river stagnates in the sandy soil there, likely a former lake or seabed.
Visitors to the swamp are infrequent, haunted as it is by mutated flora and fauna and other monstrosities. Still, bandits find it a suitable place to hide from reprisal and from time to time pilgrims, Assistants, or those who wish to be Assistants to the Surgeon may be found gathering herbs in the fetid muck to offer him. Many who venture on such expeditions do not return.
Other than a few enduring bandit camps there are no settlements in the swamp. The only permanent intelligent presence is the creature known as the Hag. Few have met her. Fewer still have returned to tell the tale, and given the wildly varying descriptions, most of them are probably lying. Rumors of the Hag can be heard in Surgeontown, where her role depends on the teller. To some, she is a cannibalistic witch; to others she is a helpful forest spirit. The truth is more likely somewhere between the extremes.
