The Fisher's War Military Conflict in Massaolo | World Anvil

The Fisher's War

"They have been growing more erratic as we make progress in our effort to end the wars that have plagued our people for centuries. This is just one example."
Kezdel Vostl I to Arune IV Zaderov
The Fisher's War was an undeclared war between the Ultuski Potentate and the Likovan Crown which was aided by it's allies in the Konelsva Alliance that lasted from the spring to the autumn of 560 LE.

The Conflict

Prelude

The harvest of 559 was a particularly poor one, particularly in the Ultusk Islands and the coastal regions of Likovas. The poor harvest prompted civilians from both kingdoms to turn to fishing to make up their food difference. This quickly lead to fishing vessels crossing into the other's claimed territorial waters. Tensions escalated when an Ultuski fisherman rammed a Likovan one and reportedly boarded his boat and beat him with an oar. Arune IV Zaderov of Likovas ordered an increased naval presence in the disputed waters. Vzjoknir Grigor Putalkin of Ultusk did the same.

The Engagement

Neither side wanted a full scale war on account of their already weakened economies from the poor harvest the previous year. Nevertheless, both were willing to use military force to enforce their claims to the disputed waters. On the 13th of Kewim 560 the Likovan vessel Argylle was rammed by two Ultuski ships and her crew was forced to scuttle her. Rammings and limited fire exchanges between the two navies continued to pick up throughout the spring and into summer. Support for the Likovans by their allies in Radinvia and Buvostia also became more overt as Buvostian ships began to detain and harass trade ships bound for the Potentate. By the end of summer the Likovans had near complete control over the disputed waters and began making excursions to within eyesight of Ultuski ports. The blockade of Dunskop in the month of Opante proved to be the pain point. Grigor agreed to recognize Likovan sovereignty over the disputed waters and would pay compensation for the lives lost in the conflict. Likovan forces occupied Dunskop for the remainder of 560 until the reparations were paid.

Outcome

Ultuski civilian craft barred from Likovan waters. Ultuski naval capabilities crippled. Likovan occupation of Dunskop.

Aftermath

Further isolation of the Ultuski Potentate. Strengthened Likovan commitment to Konelsva Alliance.

Historical Significance

Legacy

In Konelsva lands the war is seen as a triumph for the Alliance, an example of how the three kingdoms can benefit from cooperation.    In Ultusk, the war is seen as an embarrassment and another example of the mainlander's efforts to undermine them and their sovereignty.
