Joebal vrei Churft

"If the gods are real, then I'll gladly take whatever rewards they wish to grant me for good works they wish. If they are not, I'll be content knowing that the world is better than I left it regardless. Doing good only in search of rewards has little right to be called 'good' at all."
Joebal vrei Churft was a Demian philosopher from the city of Chuft who is well known for his work on the philosophy of secular moralism.

Personal history

Joebal was born in Chuft in the mid 4th century L.E. to a Demian father and a Chol mother. As a result of his mixed parentage, he was exposed to both the Draskyiti and U-wa-ne schools of Tosemuism throughout his life. While the notion that the various interpretations of Tosemuist religion were all valid to some extent was widespread by the time Joebal was born, it was still commonly understood that these different schools were the sources of morality for their respective adherents. Joebal began to question to himself and his parents which of the two branches of the faith he belonged to and was never satisfied with any answer that they could give him.   By his early twenties, Joebal had demonstrated enough academic aptitude for his admission into the University of Tharsa on a religious studies scholarship, where he hoped to learn enough to satisfy his curiosity concerning which school of faith was most moral and, more importantly, which one he ought to belong to. During his time at the University, he came under the tutelage of Aerin Bulousi and learned of his travels to Ikeyanu and his interaction with the native peoples there. Joebal asked Aerin what branch of Tosemuism the Yue or Ma followed, to which Aerin simply replied that they didn't, their faiths were completely foreign. Joebal began to study the faiths of the islanders, pressing Aerin for as much information on their beliefs and rituals as he could remember. Joebal was convinced that he could find a link between the faiths of the islanders and Tosemuism. It had to be there, they seemed like moral and good people after all, they had to be Tosemuist, even if they themselves didn't know it. Despite years of searching, Joebal was unable to find anything linking the islanders' faiths to Tosemuism.   After years of wrestling with the question of how non-Tosemuist peoples could be moral while even Tosemuists could be seen to act immoral, Joebal came to believe that morality could not be derived from Tosemuism after all. What's more, Joebal became convinced that morality was not derived from any religion or religious collective at all and was instead something innate to humans and elves. Joebal decided to publish his thoughts in Modern Morality upon his graduation for fear that backlash might see him removed from the University. After publication, the book found widespread success alongside widespread condemnation by religious and secular authorities alike. Despite the denouncement, Joebal's academic contemporaries praised the book and its ideas, as did a large portion of the merchant class. These allies would work to translate the publication and spread it abroad, leading to the philosophy becoming globalized by the end of Joebal's life.
