Broken Isles

"This is a glimpse of what our people could be."
Kimo The Traveler
The Broken Isles are an archipelago resting off the northeast coast of Kedizlim which serve as the homeland of the Tamawei people. The islands' ideal climate and strategic position make them a valuable possession of the Republic of Cholate, who have held the island since the second century L.E.

Geography

The volcanic islands are famous throughout the world for their black sandy beaches and verdant jungle interiors. Each island has a central volcano, some of which are still semi-active.

Fauna & Flora

The islands boast a vibrant array of flora and fauna. All the mainstays of island ecosystems are present; palm trees, birds, fish, crabs, and other longtime inhabitants are plentiful. Other recent additions such as rice, cats, and dogs have been introduced by the Chol since their acquisition of the islands, the latter two in particular have destabilized the local ecosystem significantly.

History

The Broken Isles are referenced in surviving Elven Dominion records, referring to the islands as a refuge for escaped human slaves. These humans are thought to be the forefathers of the modern Tamawei islanders. No records reference any human force from the isles participating in the Great Invasions indicating they likely kept to themselves on their island. Little is known of the islands between the Invasions and the first recorded contact between the Chol and the Tamawei in 279 L.E. The Chol records seem to indicate the contact as routine, suggesting that this was not a true first contact and the two groups had known about one another for some time before this. By the fourth century L.E. the islands were considered to be a possession of the Republic of Cholate. Starting in the mid 7th century L.E. the Republic began to implement stricter assimilationist policies on the island in order to make the inhabitants consider themselves Chol. This policy has met with mixed success, producing a sizable portion of the upcoming generation who view themselves as part of the Chol people, but alienating others who were previously happy to view themselves asĀ "Haukapa" to the Chol.
