Puno

Puno is a small city of approximately 20,000 residents, located in the southern Andean highlands. It stretches back from the shores of Lake Titicaca, up into the overlooking hills, with the more prosperous areas located closer to the water. The majority of the buildings are low one- or two-story structures made from stone or brick, and the streets they line become increasingly narrow and more maze-like the farther uphill one goes. The center of the city is dominated by a broad plaza ringed with neat greenery and trees and overlooked by the imposing edifice of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Charles Borromeo   If Lima is Peru's cultural and political capital, Puno is it's folkloric capital, and the local Quechua people keep their ancient ways alive here. Some of the people of Puno live or work on floating islands in Lake Titicaca, man-made structure formed by platforms of reeds and mud, or groups of reed boats tied together.   The Investigators stopped here en route to the Pyramid Tomb, ostensibly for Augustus Larkin and Luis de Mendoza to purchase pack animals. They had the opportunity to speak with a local healer-woman named Nayra and hear the legends she had to tell.
