Ruprecht the Sexton

Ruprecht was sexton at the St. Beatus Priory in the Wesweg vorburg, outside the Wunschau city walls.   He was known as a drunk and close talker who liked to whisper. He was formerly a strong man who became a hunchback later in life. Nevertheless, he was one of the few remaining people who could conduct a Gaalite burial. Three days prior to the start of the campaign, he disappeared, and the door to the sacristy where he lived was reported locked from the inside.   Prior to his disappearance, he was known to Franz through his father Reinhard, who often worked with Ruprecht in his capacity as a plague doctor. Franz has also stated that Ruprecht had given him an hourglass some months prior to his disappearance.   When the party, charged with locating Ruprecht by the Wunschau authorities forced its way inside, they found three corpses belonging to Ruprecht's young assistants laid out in their beds upstairs. All seemed to have succumbed to the Plague, though it was also discovered that they bore signs of strangulation .The initial conclusion is that their master administered a mercy killing to put them out of their misery. Subsequent exploration uncovered the some crosses with Gaal's body deliberately chipped off, and a wax doll that was apparently a representation of Bishop Udo. Witchcraft was now strongly suspected.   Later, the party discovered Ruprecht's body in a secret chamber off the cellar. The body lifted out of the coffin, the five braziers around it became animate, and then Ruprecht, perhaps dead, began to cast hurtful spells at the group. He also created multiple copies of himself, and shrouded the room in impenetrable darkness. The party, several of its members badly hurt, decided to flee, but as they did, the corpses upstairs also animated, and began to attack neighborhood people. The party set the house on fire to prevent any more witchery from harming the nearby residents, but the fire spread quickly to surrounding structures.   Two of the party members informed the authorities of what had happened. Eddi spoke to Vogt Wolff, while Dietmar informed Bishop Udo of the chipped crucifixes and the wax doll. The Bishop told Dietmar that he always found Ruprecht suspicious, and passed him over for ordination (which likely elicited the latter's attempt to harm the bishop by making a wax effigy of him).   The party returned to the sacristy a second time on the following day. At that point, they were able to deal with Ruprecht, whose head was removed by Franz der Schwarzhoffen. His minions, including a shapeshifting rat (likely his imp) were also slain or neutralized. His body was subsequently burned, but the head and his skull amulet were taken by the group. Their purpose and utility are currently uknown.
