Venus

Venus is a rocky planet in the Sol-System in the Milky Way and the second planet in order of orbits. It was named after the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility. The first settlement on Venus was established in the year 2281 in the form of a research facility housing five people. The first cloud city, New Babylon, was established in 3117.

Geography

Venus is the hottest planet in the Sol-System, partly due to a strong greenhouse effect created by the thick carbon dioxide atmosphere and a sulfuric acid cloud covering the whole planet. On average, Venus is hotter than Mercury, even though Mercury is closer to the sun than Venus.   The vast majority of Venus is made up of flat, rocky plains. Elevation occurs mainly in large calderas and volcanoes. The latter reach heights of up to 8km with extremely large diameters, reaching diameters of up to 400km. Some of the largest single volcanoes are Theia Mons and Maat Mons, reaching 6km and 8km in height respectively.   Even though no significant amounts of water occur, Venus does have some form of sea level. Due to the extremely thick and heavy atmosphere, the pressure can reach up to 95 bar in certain areas. At those high pressures, carbon dioxide and nitrogen turn supercritical and occur in liquid form, creating seas and channels of liquid CO2 and Nitrogen

Habitation

Most of Venus' surface is uninhabited due to the extremely inhospitable nature of the planet. Only about 30'000 beings currently reside on Venus itself, mainly in facilities involving research and mining of resources like sulfur.   The vast majority of Venus' population lives in cities in low orbit, just above the sulfuric acid clouds. The climate above the clouds is naturally similar to the one of Earth with temperatures ranging between 0°C and 30°C and a pressure close to 1 atm. Currently, there is a total of 17 so-called "cloud ities". The three largest of those cities, known as New Babylon , Nineveh, and Persepolia, are home to the majority of the roughly 250'000 beings currently inhabiting the cloud cities.
