St. Lyra's Library

St. Lyra's Library is the oldest library in the fae kingdom. It was built in 1450 and originally filled with tomes of books carried to the city from scholars from all the lands who came to study in the shadow of the great beyond mountains. The oldest books and histories in the kingdom all reside in this library. When Raea, the fae capital, was invaded in the first human wars in 1503, scholars from their great library carried the books inside out of the burning city to Gardinya Lyra, saving a thousand years of fae knowledge. The library of St. Lyra is thought to be blessed as Gardinya Lyra is the only major city never to be invaded, and its library, one of the few in the kingdom not to be burned down and of needing to be rebuilt.   In 1915, the largest city in the fae kingdom, Ver Coasta, decided it wanted to make a play for also being the center of learning. They built the largest university and library the kingdom had ever seen, and filled it with copies of the books that still rest in St. Lyra's Library. As Ver Coasta was easier to get to and more centrally located, students and scholars started to flock there instead, forgetting of the blessing of St. Lyra. It was then the people of Gardinya Lyra decided that more resources needed to be sunk into the University and Library, as they did not want to lose their position as the most prominent city for scholars. And while their efforts did not go unnoticed, they simply could not compete.   Today, there are less and less scholars that come to the city. They have forgotten about the blessing entirely. Technological advancements in Ver Coasta have made it so looking at the original book texts is a nearly irrelevant art. Still, the scholars there, called the Children of the Blessed, maintain the books and records with an almost religious devotion. One never knows when that knowledge might be once again needed to save the day.
