Nosbury
The town of Nosbury, in the foothills of the Keelmond Mountains , is not all that remarkable as far as towns go. If you happen to be on the southern end of the Chich Empire, it is one of the easier places to cross the Brampton River – meaning it is not unusual for merchants or wanderers to pass through. Additionally, it is not too far from where vast herds of wild oxen are known to roam, making hunters both local and seasonal a common sight. Although the Brampton River is navigable, it’s feisty enough that most boats are smaller, with only one or two person crews. Larger vessels only become viable once the Brampton meets with the Swatondal Fork near the city of Piclesbury to the north. The citizenry of Nosbury are largely simple folk – tradesmen supporting the outlying farmers and hunters – although there are a few wealthy in or around Nosbury who decided that the lack of high society is a fair trade for getting them farther from the capital city of Tutre (and thereby Emperor Conidicus), and/or the seemingly endless battles with the Principality of Chawburia. As with most places, humans are the predominant race of Nosbury, although the proximity to wildlands, mountains, and trade mean that no race is unexpected or unwelcome.
Government
Lord Gofraid Gon is technically the Baron in charge of Nosbury and the surrounding countryside, but he generally doesn't involve himself in the day-to-day business of the town. Most defer to Mayor Martha Fundana, even those technically outside the jurisdiction of Nosbury.
Defences
No walls or moats surround Nosbury, although the Brampton River does flow to the East. The single bridge crossing the Brampton is wide enough to allow easy travel, even for caravans, however, an army would be hard-pressed to surround Nosbury if coming from the east. The Guardhouse is located in the South District, as that is where trouble is the most likely to come, in the forms of Ogres or other outlaws. It is equipped with a tall tower at which a watch is constantly posted, ready to ring the alarm bell if necessary. Should trouble come from the North, the wealthy living there have their own guards that can handle small threats, and larger threats would probably give enough warning to allow for retreat into Nosbury Proper if they felt it necessary.
Industry & Trade
If Nosbury is known for anything, it is hunting. The oxen that roam to the southwest feed and clothe the people of Nosbury, with the excess being bartered for other goods. Some farmers also till the land around Nosbury, but the soil is too rocky to grow much more than barely and other hardy plants. Traders using the Brampton River often use mule-drawn barges.
Nosbury is the last major settlement before the Wadecook Pass. As such, many clothiers, blacksmiths, and other shops carry at least a small selection of warm clothing and mountaineering gear year-round. While the largest influx of visitors to Nosbury come in the fall to hunt oxen before the winter, late spring sees the arrival of those wishing to cross over to the Orms Empire. In years of a later thaw, some may stay in Nosbury for extended periods while waiting for a more hospitable crossing.
Districts
Those with money or connections tend to live in the Old District, although Lord Gofraid and the truly wealthy live outside of Nosbury to the north. The guardhouse is located to the south, as that is where trouble is most likely to come. If it's entertainment you're after, head for Bard's Reach. And while housing and shops tend to intermingle, if you want goods on the more remarkable side, Darkstair is the best bet.
Geography
The land around Nosbury is relatively flat, with gently rolling hills and tall grasses. Traveling south towards the Keelmond Mountains, the land quickly grows rocky and rugged. The Brampton River on the east side of town flows swiftly north. It cannot be safely crossed on foot, but it is also not deep enough to support large boat traffic. Merchants using the Brampton most often come with mule-drawn barges.
