Tlhogh Stone

A Proposal of Marriage

A tlhogh stone is a long honored tradition of the dragonborn of Malgrave. A male or female dragonborn will find a precious stone and spend painstaking time and effort cutting and polishing a precious stone into something they present to someone they wish to be married to. If the gift is accepted, the mate of said dragonborn will go out to find a stone to cut and polish to give to their partner in turn. Historically, these have always been set into pieces of armor or weaponry, symbolizing their partner protecting them even when they are far apart. Each dragonborn is free to choose where they will set the gift they have been given and will usually not ever replace the object ever again, typically wearing or carrying it for the rest of their lives.   The tradition of setting the stone into a combat item was started back when the world was constantly at war or in a state of battle. Jewelry was impractical as it served little purpose, but the dragonborn still wished to show and display their affection somehow. While much of the world has become peaceful, this tradition continues and other races regognize the significance as well. To those not in the clans, it is a reminder of the support the dragonborn gave as a military powerhouse when the world was still young, but also that even in the most dire of times it is not impossible to find love.

Crafting

There is no disgnated stone as a proper stone to use. In a way, it is symbollic of the person you want to be your partner, therefore it is up to each dragonborn to find the appropriate stone. This will depend on their potential partner's favorite color, favorite stone, or even the symbollic meaning behind the stone itself. This goes for the cut and polish as well.
Originally, the gems were cut by a dragonborn's own claws and polished by rubbing the stone against their scales. While this isn't as practiced anymore, cutting and polishing yourself is still something each dragonborn is expected to do. Buying a gem from a jeweler is typically frowned upon as it takes no real effort involved and reflects poorly on the individual as a partner.
