The Grave of Malcontents Myth in Malgrave | World Anvil

The Grave of Malcontents

Malgrave was once ignored by the deities. The world was too volatile after its forming, the land seas and sky in constant turmoil, destroying itself and reforming over and over. When people first started survivng the impact upon the realm, they would barely last a few days before the elements would sunder their souls and bodies.   The gods would laugh at such beings. Arrogant wizards and sorcerers from other realms thinking they could defy the will of the divine, trying to leave their own in search of new worlds. Their hubris earned them a fate of folly by landing on a world that could not support life. They were amused as well by the people caught up and drawn into the Elemental Planes, swallowed up from their world and spat out onto the inhospitable realm. The disdain they had for these short lived lives of those that landed in this plane earned Malgrave its name, The Grave of Malcontents.   While it was the majority opinion of the gods to this world, it was not universal. Certain benevolent gods did wish to help the people of Malgrave, doing their best to help the people that struggled, namely orcs and elves, whose bodies were resilient and magical enough, respectively, to let them survive. With the fiends pouring in from the other realms and the mortals persisting in the face of it, those that mocked and laughed at those that landed in Malgrave claim that their intervention was mercy. That the mortals had proven themselves worthy of the gods' attention and there were now innocent lives of those born to the realm at stake. The truth is that those that ignored them wanted control over them once again. Their strength and courage frightened them, made them jealous. It was not an act of mercy, but one to put mortals in a position of owing the gods again.   The people exist because they stood in defiance of the gods, not because they bent their knee to them.

What a powerful backstory to your world! It gives a sense of how dark and yet hopeful it can be.
