Kresh Tradition / Ritual in Malgrave | World Anvil

Kresh

A kresh is a communal nest that dragonborn place their eggs into to be watched over by one person, known as the Kresh Mother. This was initially created during a time in which few dragonborn could be spared from other duties and gave them a way to have someone watch over their egg.

History

During a time of turmoil in Malgrave, in its earliest recorded history, as the dragonborn were doing everything they could to survive, a string of egg theft plagued all of the clans. With no one to spare, the clans agreed that the best course of action was to place their eggs in a central location with one of their best warriors to protect the future generations at any cost. Each clan found their own location and left their most passionate and empathetic warrior behind at each, designating scouts to send back resources to these hidden locations. These kreshes were maintained until Malgrave was safe enough for the clans to set out and find themselves permanent settlements. Over the years, as cities were built and battles were fought less and less frequently, the need for a kresh faded for most of the clans as populations and defenses grew. Parents could easily care for their own eggs and children without fear and so most do as time continues for them. Each clan still has one, but it is up to members of each clan to decide whether to utilize it or not, with the exception of the Sivak Clan.

Kresh in Practice

With dragonborn eggs needing exposure to the element that matches the breath weapon type to incubate, most kreshes are permanently set up in suitable environments. Those that don't have easy access to such things like those that breathe lighting or the majority of the gem dragonborn, they will have a secure location and typically have several kresh mothers. The kresh mother will monitor the eggs, keeping them safe and properly incubated. Each clan has their own rules for how their kresh operates, but keeping eggs there until they show signs of hatching is universal.   Some clans with smaller populations that need parents to continue contributing to the clan will often impliment a maturity level where the kresh mother will care for the children after they hatch until they reach a certain age. This is also varient between clans, which also typically depends on the lifestyle of each adding factors. With Malgrave in a state of stability and relative peace, fewer and fewer in several of the clans see the need for a kresh any longer, arguing that they only remain because of tradition.
