Draconian Ethnicity in Malgrave | World Anvil

Draconian

Draconians are a type of dragonborn that once had their eggs corrupted to make the offspring more powerful. This created an unstable dragonborn in both body and mind, making them volatile and dangerous. They are widely considered irredeemably evil.

Description

Appearance

Draconians look almost like dragonborn. Their heads tend to look more primitively reptillian and their size can be drastically larger than normal. Their scales will somewhat match the color of the original dragonborn parents, but be dulled and lacking any luster. Many of these altered dragonborn will grow wings, unlike their untainted counterparts. All tend to be built with thick, powerful muscle and a tougher hide of thick scales with characteristics more similar to alligators and crocadiles. They have long, powerful tails that they use to lash out in a fight. Their very presence, even to those uneducated on what draconians are, is that of 'evil dragonborn' personified.

History

Early history and supposed creation

During their most desparate times in the Reclamation War, the dragonborn were on the forefront of the battlefield to distract from the other races of Malgrave working to end the war. Running low on soldiers, one had noticed that th emost powerful warriors that had managed to slay more demons and devils that others would eventually develop powers similar to their adversaries. Gathering as much information and knowledge as he could, this dragonborn, Rak'tharin, wanted to test and see if the process could be accelerated in children so that they would be able to fight back against the Hells and Abyss.   At first, a small few volunteered their eggs. These were dying mothers or desparate dragonborn unsure of what the future would hold. Developing a ritual, Rak'tharin would test as long as he could before needing to move locations was the war raged on. Most eggs would turn to stillborn at first, but the methods began working, as the children began to live longer and longer after hatching, showing promise of massive potential in their abilities. When it was finally perfected, the volunteers had dried up. Disturbed by the changes in their youngest members and the lack of empathy each one possessed, they feared what they were creating and turned away from the experiment.   Furious that he had spent so much time trying to give his kind an advantage and being shunned for it, Rak'tharin knew in his mind that they would change their minds if he had enough of them to turn the tides of the war in their favor. He began stealing eggs from around the world, perfecting his process and mass producing hundreds of Draconians to fight against the demons and devils. What he hadn't counted on was the innate cruelty within each of his creations, tainted from birht by the blood of fiends. They turned on the dragonborn, joining Graz'zt, the Devil Prince of Temptations in his pursuit of enslaving mortal life.   When the other dragonborn learned of what Rak'tharin had done, they turned demanded he surrender for judgement. The sorcerer refused, declaring that it was the other dragonborn who were at fault for not accepting his Draconians and not submitting more eggs to be converted into his ultimate warriors. It was the dragonborn who had betrayed him, not the other way around in his mind. He escaped with a few that were still loyal to him, eventually joining the fiends as well.   Fearing he would steal more eggs, the dragonborn clans agreed that they would have communal nests, known as a kresh and each would be guarded by a Kresh Mother, someone who would protect the eggs and children above all else against anything and anyone.   Eventually Rak'tharin was caught and slain, but his Dracoinians continued to fight. They alone became the reason the dragonborn of Malgrave nearly faced complete extinction. Rak'thari's notes were lost, but all clans agreed that if they were ever found, they would need to destroy them and anyone who had seen them to prevent such evil from ever being created again.

Additional History

During the Age of Tranquility, General Arseny Vadima of Frostbane found the notes and rituals created by Rak'tharin. He worked to alter and perfect it, creating an army of obedient Draconians as well as experimenting further and eventually creating five Feral Draconians that were easier to control and wouldn't self destruct upon their death, making them raiseable or reuseable.

Society

As beings who crave suffering and violence against others, their society is largely based on cunning and physical strength. They often bully each other, each in their own way asserting dominance, with those capable of both overpowering and manipulating those around them being the leaders of packs. They are sterile, so they tend to feel beholden to their creators or are driven to steal eggs from dragons and dragonborn to create more it any among them knows how to use the ritual.

Draconians in Frostbane

The Draconians in Frostbane are soldiers under part of the military that is working to overthrow the current leader of the Junta. They are more disciplined than their ancestors which makes their cruelty more pronounced. They currently have no social standing and are in fact not known to most of the people of Frostbane. They stay in bunkers at the behest of their creators and lurk in the shadows, growing frustrated with their position.
