Tapestry of Dal-Takar

One of the most mysterious and sought after artifacts in Malatoria is a magical tapestry “the power of which is only exceeded by its mystery.” It has “black box” powers. But what does that apparent nonsense mean?   The Tapestry of Dal-Takar, originally called “The Weave of Fate” was woven at the dawn of creation by three beings known only as the “Norns.” Not much more is known about these primordial beings, but common legends hold that they are the weavers of “fate,” and that the patterns of their weavings determine the destiny of all things. But this is not wholly so.   The Norns had the power to determine the fate of all existence and collapse all possibility into certainty. In order for the Norns to foreclose on the fate of all things, however, the Tapestry would have to be finished. But they left it intentionally open and incomplete. The multiverse and the planes are not “closed” to change and transformation. So the Tapestry is *not* a weaving of fate, but rather of possibility and generation. Any being of sufficient power strength and will (at least level 15) who possesses the Tapestry may use it to traverse possibilities (i.e., travel to alternate possible worlds) and, with the proper (extraordinarily complex and difficult) rituals, erase, undo, merge, or destroy possible worlds. Therefore, it is a creation of nearly limitless power, but that power is exceeded by its mystery because of the myriad possibilities it allows. It can be used for nearly anything. It therefore appears blank with unfinished edges…it is at once everything and nothing.   Obviously, powerful beings from across the multiverse seek the Tapestry for their own ends. The Norns, who are bound to the Weave of Fate, work to stabilize reality by hiding it randomly across worlds. Thus, they hid the Tapestry on Malatoria after the Apocalypse of the Forgotten Years, in the ruins of Dal-Takar, reasoning that seekers of the Tapestry would rule out a world newly destroyed as its possible location.   May heroes and villains have sought the Tapestry for its incredible powers.   Famously, it was retrieved by a group of heroes from Elendar for the mad wizard Tarquinian during The Golden Age but its current whereabouts are unknown.
