Crowley
Crowley (a.k.a. Crow)
Crowley was born into a small flock of other Kenku in a dark forest. Their lives were simple, working as copy artists for The Klaesarth Academy for the Arcane. For his part, Crowley began to take an interest in magic. However, he was not permitted to actually study it, as he could not afford the tuition costs, nor did he qualify for one of the schools available scholarships. Regardless, through his work transcribing volumes, he was able to pick up quite a bit of information about history, magic, science, and even art.
He found a particular affinity for philosophy, and after one of the professors took an interest in him, he was furnished with many books on the subject to transcribe. In this way, he became exposed to a great deal of ideas on how the world should work. It was this same professor who gave him the name Crowley. He stated that his former name, ‘Turning Page’, wasn’t fit for an intellectual. This was likely a bit of a cruel joke, though Crowley adopted the name, and has kept it ever since.
Though he was growing dissatisfied with his place among the proletariat, held down by the bourgeoisie, he was overall satisfied with his life, taking joy in his ability to read the great volumes of the school. But, this happy life was not to last. One of his cohort was found to be stealing from the school, and in an act he continues to hold as unjust, the whole flock was turned out. Rather than determine the true culprits, an investigation to determine who else was guilty was found to be unworthy of the time it would take. Far easier would it be to simple replace the Kenku flock with another, less guilty gaggle.
Returned again to the hostile forest, the Kenku flock found they had grown unaccustomed to living in the wild. They were eventually undone by an attack by some local bandits. Most of the flock was killed outright, though some were taken as slaves. Before they were returned to the bandit camp, they managed to make a daring escape into the forest, though only Crowley and one other Kenku managed to escape. Both were wounded in the attempt. They hid for three days, during which time Crowley’s friend passed away. Wounded, starved, and near death, Crowley called into the darkness for deliverance. It was then that Kael appeared before him, a shadowy, black specter. It offered to save him, and serve as his patron, if he would in turn serve it on the material plane. Crowley agreed, and a pact was made.
With his family dead, his place at the academy lost, and his obligation to Kael, Crowley became an adventurer, offering his translation and mimicry services where he can in order to earn some coin.
He presents himself as one of the great scholars of the academy, often bragging about all of the books he’s read, attempting to present himself as one of the philosophers he’s read so much about.

Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Crowley, like the scholars from the Klaesarth Academy of the Arcane where he lived, seeks to decode and gain the power of the Haltaran. If he is able to unlock its secrets, he believes he will be able to free Kael from Carrion.
It does not escape Crowley's knowledge that Heinrich Klaesarth appears to share a similar name to his patron, though whether or not there is any connection, he does not know.
