Magick and metals

Associations with magick

Various metals have different associations with magick in the world of Magudonya.   Silver is considered the most magical of the metals as it concentrates mana and allows it to be used for the creation of magical effects.   Copper can also be used by magic users, but its capacity for storing mana is considerably less than silver.   Iron also attracts mana, but the particles of magick disappear on contact with this base metal. It is for this reason that practitioners of magic avoid using and wearing this metal and that iron weapons are never magical.   Gold appears to have a similar effect to iron, but as some of the most powerful holy relics of the Mithran faith are made of this metal this is taken as a sign that the power of Mithra is above mere sorcery.

Metals and Weapons

Unlike our world, iron is not the predominant element that weapons are made from in the Sorendenese Empire. The metallurgists of the Empire have discovered ways to make bronze (an alloy of copper and tin) weapons as hard and as durable as iron weapons and although these bronze weapons are more expensive than their iron equivalents, they are favoured by users of magic because they don't affect their magic.   Notes:
  1. The process of making steel—a carbon–iron alloy—is not commonly practiced in the Sorendenese Empire and steel weapons are unusual to find in the Empire.
  2. Bronze weapons are approximately twice as expensive as their iron equivalents because of the relative rarity of the copper and tin used in making the alloy.
