Benefits
Many equites are officials, soldiers, or members of the imperial government and are afforded salaries and other benefits befitting those offices.
History
The origins of the equites come from the imperial light and heavy cavalry that served alongside but separate from the legions in the older days of the Corithan Empire. In the days when soldiers were expected to provide their own equipment the equites were wealthier citizens who could afford to bring horses to battle with them which earned them a higher bounty and share of the spoils of war. These citizens could grow to become very rich during times of conflict and conquest and eventually became more or less their own social class of warriors and mercenaries.
In modern society the equite class exists as a form of nobility that is bestowed as recognition of the bearer's deeds or worthiness and not inherited through familial ties. Equites are roughly equivalent to a knight in rank and station and every member of the Templar is a member of the equite social class.
Cultural Significance
The Equite class exists in between the common citizenry and landed gentry of the Corithan Empire. It is the highest title those of common birth can hope to obtain in their life but also a title sought by landed nobility for the respect and honor it brings to an individual and family. Equites come from the entire spectrum of social and economic classes and could be bestowed upon Plebians and Barons alike.
