Everbreach

A moderately sized city, Everbreach is one of the few inhabited settlements located in the Deep Below, and the one furthest into the system. It dates back to before the Deep Below as protected, formed in the early days of exploration of the subterranean system, when it served as a base camp. While most of these bases have fallen into disuse over time, Everbreach instead expanded and grew into a more permanent settlement.   When moves were made to protect the Deep Below, the decision was made to limit how many settlements could exist in the caves. Of the few which remained, Everbreach was one of the more expansive, even if it wasn't terribly impressive back then, and the one furthest into the cave system. As such, it became a main stop for anyone intending to go further into the Deep Below, which in turn encouraged it to grow further. Within bounds, of course.

History

Everbreach begun its life as one of many base camps created by people exploring the Deep Below. Its location, further into the Deep Below than most base camps, and near several different branches in the cave system, meant that the camp had serious potential for re-use. As such, its creators built it to last longer than just one expedition.   The base camp quickly grew beyond just them, however. They invited other explorers to use it as well, arguing that the Deep Below was expansive enough for everyone, as long as they added their own provisions rather than taking those of others. Before long, more people than just explorers came over, building permanent additions to the base camp. Merchants and stores sold supplies to explorers-to-be, inns and taverns offered space to rest (and food and drink to share with fellows), and so forth.   With Everbreach thus growing into a proper town, and its location, it was selected as one of the few settlements in the Deep Below allowed to remain. It continued to grow, though its permanent population grew rather slowly. Not many, after all, where keen to move into a fully underground life, even if they could leave rather easily with the use of magic.   Since Everbreach received its own magic school--Cavehaven--it has grown into a proper city. Many parents enjoy the thought of living somewhere near their children's school, even if it is underground, and the presence of teenagers who are allowed into the city has allowed for an increased flow of money, as well as interest in services and goods not related to the Deep Below.
