Crythian Species in M'Zeri | World Anvil

Crythian (Cry-thee-ann)

Crythian are humanoid crab-like species that reside on the surface of the planet Eridu. They share a common ancestor with the Eridians.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Crythians have an exoskeleton that covers their entire body to protect them from the harsh underground terrain.
They have two sets of upper limbs, the larger set resembling large claws used for hunting and digging, and the smaller set which function as manipulators, possess five digits capable of intricate movements and delicate tasks.
In comparison to the Eridians, Crythians have undergone significant physiological changes to adapt to the harsh conditions on the planet's surface. They possess a more streamlined body structure, enabling them to navigate the desert landscapes more efficiently.
Their exoskeletons have evolved to be thinner and lighter, providing better heat dissipation and agility. Furthermore, Crythians have developed specialized respiratory systems that allow them to extract moisture from the scarce desert air.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking

Crythian exoskeletons range in colours, from light brown to yellowish-gray, and can develop various markings which help them camouflage in the sand.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Crythians have adapted to the bright sunlight on the surface, resulting in less sensitive eyes but an enhanced ability to detect and interpret visual cues in intense daylight. They struggle seeing in the dark.

Ecology and Habitats

Crythians have adapted to survive on the desert surface of Eridu and have constructed architecture and shelter to help protect them from the harsh weather of the desert.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Crythians are omnivores, with a preference to eating small invertebrates like insects, reptiles and other desert dwelling creatures.

Genetics and Reproduction

Crythians reproduce sexually, where after a successful mating the female will become pregnant for 5 months. When she is ready to give birth, she seeks out a safe and secluded nesting area dug into the ground. The other female members of the community assist in preparing the nest by providing materials like soft vegetation and discarded exoskeletons to create a cool and protective environment for the newborns

Growth Rate and Stages

Young Crythians are born with a soft exoskeleton, which hardens as they grow and shed. They reach maturity when they reach around 15 years old, where their exoskeleton should be fully hardened.

Civilization and Culture

SOCIAL STRUCTURE

Crythian society revolves around a caste system, based on markings present on their exoskeletons. These markings are referred to as "Caste Marks" and determine an individual's role and responsibility within their society. While the markings develop on an Crythian's exoskeleton from a young age, it doesn't finish developing until they reach maturity.
Gatherers Gathers are skilled in botanical knowledge, identifying edible plants and are able to locate water sources. They are responsible for locating and collecting vital resources for their community.
Builders Builders are skilled in construction and engineering, and are responsible for creating shelters, fortifications and other structures required for the community. Due to their strength, they will aid the Sentinel caste if the numbers are required.
Sentinels Sentinels have heightened sense and combat skills, and are responsible for the defence and security of the community. They will aid the gatherer caste when travelling outside the settlement to protect them and assist with hunting.
Doctors Doctors possess advanced knowledge of medicine, medical techniques and physiological well-being. They are responsible for the physical and mental wellbeing of the community. Doctors are highly valued for their ability alleviate suffering and maintain overall heath of the community.

Unlike the more rigid hereditary nature of the Eridian caste system, the Crythian's caste system is more fluid and allows mobility between castes.
While individuals are initially assigned to a caste dependant on their markings, they have opportunities to acquire and develop new skills and potentially transition to other castes based on their abilities and interests.
This flexibility allows for a community to adapt better to the evolving needs of the settlement.

LANGUAGE

Crythians use a mixture of clicking with their pincers and verbal speech to express intent and mood in their words.

COMMON DRESS CODE

Crythians usually wear lightweight and breathable fabrics from plants to protect them from direct sunlight and abrasive sand and reduce the chance of becoming scorched. Crythian attire are of utilitarian design and feature many pockets where they sort a multitude of tools, personal belongings and essential items.

BEAUTY IDEALS

Exoskeleton patterns and markings are considered attractive traits, with symmetry and well-defined patterned being considered very aesthetically pleasing.

COURTSHIP IDEALS

Crythian courtship can involve showcasing specialised skills and suitability as a partner. Potential mates will often spend time engaging in various activities together, like exploring, sharing meals or collaborating on tasks. This builds trust, understanding an a sense of compatibility.
Crythians are not limited to attempting to court individuals from other castes and it is not an uncommon occurrence.

INTERSPECIES RELATIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS

Eridians

Despite their shared lineage, the two species have developed a strained and conflict-ridden relationship. The majority of their conflicts are related to environmental competition, cultural differences, and perceptual disparities. While there are rumours of Eridian/Crythian hybrids, the concept is looked down upon by Crythians and any sort would become a pariah.

Space-faring Species

Crythians have had a mostly positive relations with intergalactic visitors, expanding their horizons and developing diplomatic ties beyond their desert planet. They currently have membership with the Galactic Union.
