Elders Species in Lumen Expanded Universe | World Anvil

Elders

Ancient Sentient Species

The Elders are an ancient, enigmatic species originating from the planet Elyria within the Pleiades System of the Milky Way Galaxy. As the sole surviving species from the initial sentient beings created by the primordial entities known as The Creators, the Elders have assumed the mantle of cosmic stewardship and guardianship following the cataclysmic event known as The Unraveling. Their history, culture, and influence are deeply intertwined with the fundamental principles of the Lumen Universe, shaping the evolution and development of countless civilizations across the cosmos.

Physical Characteristics

Diminutive in stature, the Elders stand approximately three feet tall, with slender, sapling-like bodies covered in smooth, gray skin that possesses a unique prismatic quality, refracting light to create a radiant, spectral appearance. Their heads are adorned with delicate, diaphanous appendages that fan outwards, reminiscent of a halo or crown. The Elders' eyes are large and iridescent, reflecting a profound, starlit wisdom and a deep attunement to the subtleties and mysteries of the cosmos.

Lifespan and Culture

The Elders are known for their extraordinary longevity, with lifespans typically ranging from 300 to 500 years, and in some cases, extending over 5,000 years through intensive spiritual practices and cosmic attunement. Their culture is rooted in the principles of stewardship, protection, and the pursuit of knowledge, as exemplified by the creation of The Sanctum of Solace, a hidden enclave nestled within Elyria's Nephele Mountain Range, serving as a repository for their vast collective wisdom and cultural heritage.

Cosmic Stewardship and Mentorship

Central to the Elders' identity is their role as cosmic stewards and mentors to emerging civilizations. They maintain a vigilant watch over the Pleiades System through The Cosmic Vigil, harnessing their collective energies to shield their realm from cosmic calamities and dimensional disturbances. As Guardians of Knowledge, the Elders preserve and transmit the oral histories, legends, and cultural legacy of Elyria, ensuring the continuity of their ancient heritage.   The Elders' approach to mentorship is characterized by subtle interventions and the sharing of wisdom, guiding nascent species towards paths of enlightenment and harmony. They recognize the potential in emerging civilizations and work tirelessly behind the scenes to nurture their growth and development, fostering understanding and preventing conflicts among disparate societies.

Moral Complexity and Evolutionary Influence

Despite their benevolent demeanor, the Elders have a complex moral landscape, at times engaging in ethically ambiguous acts, such as the manipulation of the evolutionary paths of other species, in service of their primary motivation—the meticulous care and preservation of the Pleiades System. This has led them into the murky waters of genetic experimentation and subtle influence over the evolution of species such as the Lumen, Ethereans, and Draken.

Integration with The Creators' Principles

The Elders' actions and teachings are deeply rooted in the foundational principles established by The Creators during the cosmic genesis, emphasizing diversity, balance, and the capacity for evolution. By aligning their efforts with The Creators' vision, the Elders ensure a thematic continuity that spans from the universe's inception to the present era, perpetuating and safeguarding the cosmic order.

The Final Prophecy

At the core of the Elders' beliefs lies The Final Prophecy, a revelation foretelling the ascendance and rejuvenation of Elyria. This prophecy serves as a guiding light and a source of hope, inspiring the Elders to continue their steadfast stewardship and mentorship of the cosmos.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Elders are an enigmatic and ancient species, distinguished by their unique physical characteristics, remarkable senses, and extraordinary abilities.

Physical Appearance

General Body Structure: The Elders are a diminutive species, with adults typically standing between 3 to 4 feet tall. Their bodies are slender and elongated, with a graceful, almost ethereal quality to their movements. Their limbs are thin and delicate-looking, yet possess a surprising strength and dexterity.   Skin: Elder skin is smooth and hairless, with a translucent, almost opalescent quality. It ranges in color from pale, moonlit silver to deep, iridescent blue, with each individual displaying a unique pattern of subtle, shimmering hues that shift and change with their moods and environment.   Eyes: The eyes of the Elders are large and almond-shaped, dominating their faces. They are solid orbs of deep, lustrous black, flecked with points of starlight that seem to swirl and dance within their depths. These mesmerizing eyes are capable of seeing far into the infrared and ultraviolet spectra, granting the Elders a unique perception of the world around them.   Head Appendages: The Elders possess two distinct types of head appendages, each serving unique purposes:   1. Fan-like Appendages: Extending from either side of their heads are large, fan-like appendages, resembling delicate, translucent butterfly wings. These appendages are composed of thin, finely-veined membranes stretched between slender, flexible spines. The colors of these structures vary between individuals, often displaying mesmerizing patterns and hues that range from deep, cosmic blues to shimmering, nebula-like purples and pinks. While their exact function remains a mystery, these appendages are believed to aid in communication and enhance the Elders' psionic abilities.   2. Stellae: Crowning the Elders' heads are delicate, antenna-like appendages known as "stellae." These stellae are highly sensitive to changes in air currents, temperature, and electromagnetic fields, providing the Elders with a sixth sense of sorts. They are also bioluminescent, glowing softly in hues that correspond to the Elder's emotional state. The stellae are believed to play a role in the Elders' ability to manipulate their own body density, as well as in their telepathic communication.   Defining Characteristics: One of the most intriguing aspects of the Elders is their ability to manipulate their own body density. Through a complex process of molecular control, they can become as light as air or as dense as stone, allowing them to float gently above the ground or anchor themselves firmly in place. This ability, combined with their small stature, otherworldly features, and the enigmatic presence of their head appendages, contributes to the sense of mystery and wonder that surrounds this ancient species.

Senses and Abilities

Enhanced Senses:
  1. Visual Perception: The Elders' unique eyes allow them to see far into the infrared and ultraviolet spectra, granting them a broader range of visual information than most species.   2. Hearing: Their fan like appendages are capable of detecting frequencies well beyond the range of human hearing, and can pinpoint the location of a sound with uncanny accuracy.   3. Stellae Sensory Input: The stellae provide the Elders with a sixth sense, allowing them to detect subtle changes in air currents, temperature, and electromagnetic fields.   Eldritch senses perceive beyond the mundane; their eyes are windows to starlit wisdom. A lifespan stretching from centuries to thousands of years cultivates their roles as keepers of time and knowledge.   Advanced telepathic ability allows for the sharing of reflective thoughts and ancestral memories, and their command over the metaphysical can extend to the manipulation of evolutionary threads across species.   Adaptable to the ethereal stretches of space-time, their evolution has favored the cerebral over the physical, leaving them vulnerable to direct confrontations but fortified within their cosmic niches.
Physical Abilities:
  1. Regeneration: Despite their fragile appearance, the Elders are remarkably resilient and long-lived. Their bodies are capable of regenerating from injuries at an astonishing rate, and they are resistant to most known diseases and toxins.   2. Agility and Flexibility: The Elders possess remarkable agility and flexibility, able to contort their bodies in ways that would be impossible for most other species.   3. Density Manipulation: The Elders can manipulate their own body density, becoming as light as air or as dense as stone. This ability allows them to float gently above the ground or anchor themselves firmly in place.
Mental/Psionic Abilities:
  1. Telepathic Communication: The Elders are capable of telepathic communication with each other and with other psionic species, and can project their thoughts and emotions over vast distances.   2. Telekinesis: Some Elders are also capable of telekinesis, able to manipulate objects with the power of their minds.
Limitations:
  1. Physical Vulnerability: The Elders' small size and light build make them vulnerable to physical attacks from larger, stronger opponents.   2. Temperature Sensitivity: They have a low tolerance for extreme temperatures, and can quickly succumb to heat exhaustion or hypothermia if not properly protected.
