Chipton Settlement in Lossum | World Anvil

Chipton

Chipton was not the first city founded on the continent but it has grown to become it's largest and is now the second largest city on Lossum. Most of the food on Lossum originates from the Chipton processing plants and is carried from the Chipton docks on the Tilner river.   Chipton is also home to the University of Agriculture, which has taught generations of students how to improve the fertility of the lands around the Lower Tilner River region.

Government

Chipton is run by a city council elected from the population of the town and surrounding farms. A mayor is selected by the city council from among the council members and together they manage the city infrastructure and plan for growth.   The Chipton University of Agriculture consists of several buildings on the east side of town. The Dean of Agriculture administers the university and teaching curriculum. The university claims 200 sq miles of farmland directly east of Chipton, which is used for education and research purposes.

Industry & Trade

The north side of Chipton contains many food processing plants that convert the crops of the Lower Tilner River region into a wide variety of tasty dishes that are frozen and preserved for shipment to the rest of Lossum.   The port allows large freight ships to carry foodstuffs out of the region. During the harvesting season, a smaller quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables are flown directly out of the airport.   A small quantity of processed goods are shipped into the Lower Tilner River region through the port.

Infrastructure

A fairly sizable port has been constructed for a mile along the banks and dredging has deepened the river from Chipton out to the sea.   A small train depot is located in northern Chipton, which is primarily used as the terminus of a large logistics apparatus that brings crops in from local warehouses across the Lower Tilner River region.   A small airport operates in Chipton which provides passenger transport to the other continents of Lossum.

Assets

Warehouses full of food stuffs and grain elevators dot the landscape north of Chipton.

Guilds and Factions

The Baker's Guild is a collection of businesses that produce and distribute most of the food on Lossum. These businesses frequently cooperate on large infrastructure projects. However, they compete fiercely to acquire the advanced machinery and electronics, that are in short supply, to maintain their facilities and transport networks.   The Chipton University of Agriculture was first to the Lower Tilner River region and as such acquired large agriculture holdings east of Chipton. Some of these lands are used to provide income for the university making the university the largest single food production entity on Lossum, which gives them some say in the workings of the Baker's Guild. This influence has diminished as the food production on the rest of the Lower Tilner River has increased. The other source of income is in the consulting it does with the farmers of the region. The university can be credited with drastically increasing the food output of the region, as well as the creation of most of the hybrid crops used.

History

Chipton grew out of a research base that was established to study the local flora and fauna. It was quickly determined that the area would provide an excellent region for growing crops and in a few short years scattered farms were established to feed the colonists.   Over time, the research station became the Chipton University of Agriculture and the town of Chipton was founded to provide infrastructure for the Lower Tilner River region.   The Bakers' Guild was established pretty early in Chipton's history. It was a natural outcome from so much of Lossum's food production happening in a centralized location. Each region across Lossum was given a group of people dedicated to the production and transport of food. These groups were then organized into businesses. Collectively these businesses became known as the Baker's Guild. In the early years, these business competed for the limited supply of food being produced in the Lower Tilner River region. As food production increased, the competition shifted to acquiring the finished goods that allowed for the maintenance of a growing logistics network. The members of the Baker's Guild cooperated in the creation of the Lower Tilner River rail network and the dredging of the Tilner Delta.
