Qualifications
Rowjin is both a profession and social class. Some are able to rise through the ranks by displays of glory on the battlefield but many are just born into it and taught everything from the very begining.
Payment & Reimbursement
Rowjin are given an estate that they have control over and collect taxes from. In a court of law there are protections given to Rowjin as ordered by the king, they are allowed by default to attack anyone on grounds of 'self defense' or 'affairs of honor' and have the rule of 'noble word' which means the burden of proof is on the other person, weather prosecuting or defending. any more protections must be given by the king or his retainers personally.
Perception
Social Status
It's a prestigious position for anyone who can obtain it. Many works of literature have focused on the exploits of the Rowjin and children are taught to admire them.
History
It's origins trace back to the second dynasty of Mordesent that went on a rampage, accumulating vast swaths of territory. After its collapse the Rowjin's role in society would alternate from warriors to bureaucrats depending on if there was war or not. Kingdom of Blood's Rowjin are still trained warriors through and through though with efforts to pacify their still warlike nature from Bloodthorne.
