Dreams Really Do Come True Report

General Summary

While Rishaa dreams of an angelic companion, Dimitri and Rickee have opportunities of their own that they are pursuing: both have separately written Avoracious Pim. One seeks to acquire celestial blood, while the other seeks a way to trade their soul for another.   The first to arrive at Avoracious' home is Rickee, whom as he knocks on the door is greeted by a very tired scientist. Avoracious mistakes Rickee for the one who looks to trade his soul, and Rickee, thinking quickly disguises himself to look like Marianne. Pim offers a cup of tea to Rickee as they both sit down, but Rikee refuses nervously, hands clutching at the knees of his pants.   Pim admits that souls are not his normal subject matter, but he does have friends who may know more than he does, and offers to reach out to them. Rickee accepts this and leaves quickly, not even bothering to gain the celestial blood he hopes for.   As he leaves, he sees Dimitri walking towards the house. They both stop and stare at each other, Rickee's disguise having dropped as soon as Pim's door closed. They both know the other has nefarious or covert plans, but only Rickee knows what Dimitri was trying to do... for now.   The tiefling allows Dimitri to go up to Pim's door as he slinks back to the Wandering Star, and as Pim opens the door he confirms that Dimitri is the "one looking for celestial blood, yes?" Similar to Rickee, Dimitri goes along with the confusion - that is, until after he's paid Pim the fifteen gold for a small vial of unicorn blood ("good for disinfecting wounds of an unholy variety"). After this, he reveals that he was not, in fact, the one to contact Pim about the blood. It's a direct violation of his code as a physician, even if it was an honest mistake.   Caught and blackmailed by the wizard, Pim is forced to admit the same information he gave Rickee, with the promise to give Dimitri more should he learn anything else. Dimitri also discovers (but does not reveal) that Rickee had disguised himself as one of the women of the Defiants. He shows Pim a signet ring - a ring that he will present to Pim to confirm that it is really the undead wizard and not someone else disguised as him the next time Dimitri visits.   Having harassed the poor surgeon enough, Dimitri heads back to the inn. Upon entering the room, he finds Dimitri waiting anxiously, a bag packed and waiting underneath his bed as he clutches a pillow between his arms. Dimitri sits down next Rickee with a heavy sigh, and admits that he wants to trade his soul for Rickee's, that his life is over, and that Rickee is a better person than he'll ever be. Rickee refuses to accept this, and makes Dimitri pinky promise that they will work together to restore both of their bodies.   Rickee hugs his friend tightly, but still Dimitri's thoughts are dark. He admits that he will leave nothing behind when he dies anyway, but Rickee interrupts. He points out that Dimitri has a family.... and Marianne. Dimitri doesn't know what to say to that, at first. Then he asks quietly, "what do you have?"   Quickly - almost too quickly - Rickee says, "You."   It's almost enough to make the jaded wizard tear up, but instead he hugs Rickee tightly again and they slowly fall asleep, still tangled together.
The next morning, as a red sun rises over the snowy town of Brenbrooke, Marianne and Rishaa slowly awaken in their rooms. Rishaa begins her morning yoga and meditation, and Marianne decides to join her.   As the Defiants gather for breakfast, Whiskey approaches the group. He very apologetically says that due to the damages caused by Rishaa and Rex's row, he will need them to pay for the damages to The Wandering Star before they leave town. He says that he will not hesitate to call the Scaled Guard to apprehend them, and then walks away to let the party deal with the payment amongst themselves. Marianne gets up immediately, following him to the bar where she surreptitiously presses a hundred gold into his hand to repay him - more than enough.   Feeling moved by her kindness, Whiskey offers her an unsolicited piece of advice: move to Adura. When she expresses some skepticism in this advice, he reassures her he's just concerned - that it's been some time since pretty young ladies have brought him gold. Marianne turns bright red and hurries back to her group as Whiskey lets out a kind laugh, continuing with his own chores.   Meanwhile, Dimitri asks Rickee for help mending the busted hotel room. Rickee, getting real tired of everyone's shit and being the repair guy, reluctantly follows along, beginning to patch up the wall and door that were broken and splintered by Rishaa and Rex's fight.   Marianne and the others eventually come up to join them, and as Marianne is cleaning up the glass, she cuts herself on the glass. As she hisses in shock and pulls her hand back, Dimitri grabs it. Gently, he cleans away the glass and blood and presses a kiss into her palm (healing word). The cut is gone, as if it were never there. Marianne doesn't pull away, simply staring at him in shock.   After they finish cleaning up, the Defiants decide that they'll fight the spectator next. As they traipse out westward, Rex realizes the area that the spectator resides in is infused with magic, potent and uncontrolled. As an experiment, he tries using his gun to shoot a firebolt, which does fire, but as it does and Rex turns back to his friends, his speech is unintelligible to everyone except Rishaa: his understanding of Common has temporarily vanished, replaced with Celestial. Rishaa is the only one who can speak the language of the angels, so for the moment she functions as his translator until the magic wears off.   The Defiants approach, and as they begin to see the spectator's nest, Rishaa runs forward, feet barely touching the grass. Her chain dart whips out, lodging into the side of the spectator's bulbous body and dragging it down and right into Rishaa's waiting fist (critical hit). She knees it twice more with her mechanical leg and divine light explodes outwards, blinding the spectator and making it that much harder for the aberration to avoid her hits.   Marianne runs forward to join Rishaa, the rage taking hold as she grows close. Her axe swings down into the icy mud on the first hit, but the second nearly takes off one of the spectator's eye stalks (critical hit).   Rex steps forward as well, using his gun to fire a firebolt, which lands with a hiss in the snow. The magic in this place surges around him, filling his head with knowledge that he never knew he had (for the next day, Rex gains proficiency in all skills that he is not already proficient in).   The spectator's eyes begin to zip around, but the blindness from Rishaa's leg has it unable to make out anything but spots, and so it is unable to defend itself as Dimitri uses his time magic to quicken Rishaa's timeline, allowing her to react faster and hit harder than everything else around her (haste). As he does, a sparkling shield of effervescent energy gathers around him like a second skin of glowing, divine energy (if Dimitri dies within the next minute, he comes back to life as if by the reincarnate spell).   Rickee begins to holler insults as he steps closer, strumming on his loot. His vicious mockery manages to make its way through the spectator's defenses, striking into its mind as it tries to get free from Rishaa's chain dagger. Rishaa doesn't let go, though; she unsheathes her longsword and begins to hit it over and over again, bludgeoning it with the flat of her blade. It hits true twice, but in her frenzy one blow lands in the dirt instead.   Marianne shifts into her wolf form, and her axe comes down onto the eye stalks of the beholder. On the first two strikes, she nearly severs one of the violently jiggling eyes from its tendril, but it's her claws that actually cut the last stringy bits of flesh connecting the eye to its host.   Rex fires up his turret, knowing that this place is charged with violent and untamed magic. The bullets strike into the bulbous body of the spectator as he steps back, electing to not even attempt to use his own arcane magic.   The spectator's eye catches Marianne's gaze, and she feels something attempt to take hold of her body, to paralyze her in place, but she shakes her head and breaks right through it. Unfortunately, Dimitri is not so lucky. He stares right into one of the dark, abyssal eyes and is seized with unnatural terror. He throws his dagger at the creature in a panic, which sails right past the spectator's form.   Rickee strums one discordant note on his lyre, and the sound shatters the air in the battlefield, but the spectator snarls, it's remaining tendrils waving wildly. The worst of the damage suddenly explodes around Rishaa, who grits her teeth as her ears ring. She brings down her fist on the spectator's central eye, punching right through the organ and into its brain. She rips out a handful of brain matter as the spectator twitches in its death throes. Flicking the blood and flesh off of her in disgust, she looks up to Dimitri, noticing for the first time the magic surrounding him. Her eyes widen, realizing what spell he has infused with his body.    She grabs his shoulders, excitedly explaining what an opportunity he had - what reincarnation is and when she had seen the clerics of Maal use it before. Dimitri, eyes wide, agrees to let his friend kill him.   Rishaa wastes no time: over and over again she punches Dimitri, battering his body until she hears a final snap and sees him go limp. Breathing hard, she steps back and hopes that she is right.   It takes a moment.... a moment that almost breaks everyone's hearts. But then the divine skin begins to burn into Dimitri's zombie body, restoring his body to that of a tan, athletic man with chiseled features, bright blue eyes, full lips, and long honey-brown hair that curls gently around his shoulders. It worked: Dimitri is restored to the Defiants!    Rishaa laughs in relief, hugging him tightly. Then the others rush forward and hug him too. Through a slight sniffle, Rishaa offers, "I can pierce your ears for you, if you want."   The party laughs, and quickly gathers up the body parts from the spectator that Pim requested and head back to Brenbrooke. While the others celebrate, Rishaa slips away to work on her newest creation: the sword of the paruns.   The Defiants clink their glasses in The Wandering Star tavern, drinking down various drinks that leave their heads spinning:
  • Dimitri drinks a Pan-Dimensional Gargle Blaster
  • Marianne sips from an Elven Battle Spirit
  • Rickee partakes in some Roaring Eagle Ale
After dinner, Rickee and Rishaa retreat to give Marianne and Dimitri space. Marianne, tipsy and red-faced, drags Dimitri out into the snow, where she collapses down to look up at the stars. Dimitri slowly lowers himself down as well, and the two begin to drunkenly create some snow angels, which makes Marianne giggle drunkenly that they're actual snow Rishaas. As their laughter subsides, she curls up against Dimitri. Slowly, she looks up to meet his gaze.
Marianne: "Dimitri? I need you."
Dimitri: "I need you too."
The two kiss, under the freezing night sky with stars like diamonds sparkling above them.
