A New Friend Appears Report

General Summary

The next day, while having breakfast, a newcomer approaches: a soft spoken man who asks about the damage done to the rooms upstairs.   Rickee immediately gets scared and slips under the table to avoid the gaze of the newcomer. Rex  explains that it was a simple misunderstanding between friends. Horace - for this is the name of the newcomer - notices that Rex and Rishaa have the look of scholars, and asks for their assistance. You see, his wife is dying and he is looking for a spell to help her. Specifically, a wish spell. He's been looking for 26 years, but hasn't gotten any closer. Still, he hasn't given up hope.   Rishaa shrugs. They just saved one of their friends, so what's helping a stranger now?    Rex suggests that this spell couldn't only be used to save Horace's wife but also to save Rickee's soul. Rishaa shoots him a look of chagrin; that was something she would have rather kept to the Defiants.   Horace doesn't ask for any more details, recognizing that it's a sensitive subject. The Defiants - sans Dimitri and Marianne - agree to join him in his research excursion. They approach the Mornan Library, on the grounds of the eponymous university. Rickee bluffs their way through the front doors by pretending to be a visiting tutor of a nobleman's son.    As they begin to scour the bookshelves, Rex uncovers the origins of the wish spell and the powerful magic users who are most likely to be able to cast it: gods, djinn, and dragons.    Restless, Rishaa sits down at a table in the library, looking at Rahab's inert crystal. After spinning it on the table listlessly a few times, she looks to the stone floor. Curiously, she drops the crystal onto the stone, where is shatters. She picks up the pieces and begins to work on them, eventually putting them into a setting, arranged into a trifecta shape.   Rex slams a book closed in frustration. His search is fruitless, and it feels as if the answer is right on the tip of his tongue (DC 25, Rex rolled a 24).   Rickee joins back up with the others, pushing his shoulder bag to the side as he jogs up. Rishaa notices the odd movement, and a moment later notices the spell scrolls poorly hidden in his bag. She scolds the bard, while Horace watches in amusement. As she turns around to leave, Horace encourages Rickee quietly to keep the cantrip scrolls. Rickee decides to listen to his older friend, and returns the scrolls to where they were.   Having exhausted their options in the library, the party pulls a student of the university aside to ask if he knows anything about a wish-granting creature. Startled, he stammers out that he heard a legend of a spirit in a graveyard of 10,000 people. If the spirit is given the correct gift, it may grant a wish.   With that lead, Rickee decides to get some more information. Infiltrating a sewing circle of old women, he discovers that a gift of "pure" water and a trinket from "someone you've lost" are what is needed to gain a wish. Unfortunately, Rickee did not catch the specification that this gift should be given during the day.   After thanking the women, Rickee relays the information for the others. Rickee offers Nadine Vermillion's musical instrument as the sacrifice, but Rishaa points out that Nadine was killed by a vampire and might not actually be dead.   They decide to trek out anyway: a 2-3 day journey to the graveyard and another 2-3 day journey back. As they leave, Horace slips a few condoms and a note with instructions on how to use them under Rishaa and Marianne's door, having heard of the two lovebirds and wanting to make sure they're safe - ever the protective dad. Rishaa simply leaves a note telling them where they went and ending with "don't do anything I wouldn't do, but don't do anything I would tell you to do."   The Defiants, minus Dimitri and Marianne, head out. It's a short, uneventful adventure, and Rickee's forgetfulness ends the trip in failure. Oh, no one died, but the spirit refuses to appear for the party and they are forced to return empty handed, five days later. Horace bids them farewell, and continues on his own path, determined to save his wife.
