House Vellorien
House Vellorien is a dominant naval power based in Graepor, one of the busiest ports of the Snowcloak Dominion. Though not the oldest or most prestigious of the noble houses, their control of half the city’s shipyards and extensive influence over the port guard have made them an unshakable presence on the waves and in the city’s political life.
Once a family of harpooners and privateers, House Vellorien rose to nobility through their crucial role in anti-piracy operations along the Dominion’s eastern coast. Over generations, they established trade routes, fortified the harbors, and poured wealth into the Dominion’s navy. Today, they are seen as guardians of Graepor’s security, but also as ruthless enforcers of maritime law.
Structure
- Lord Admiral Calvian Vellorien (Patriarch) – A sharp-eyed veteran of two pirate wars, Calvian is as much a commander as a noble. He is rarely seen without his naval coat, and still personally oversees patrol routes and shipyard audits. In public, he is all propriety; in private, he plans like a spymaster.
- Lady Myra Vellorien (His sister) – A high-ranking Magister of maritime law, Myra manages the customs courts, where smugglers, pirates, and shady merchants are tried. She is known to settle favors behind closed doors in exchange for long-term leverage.
- Kale Vellorien (Son and shipwright) – Unlike his warlike father, Kale is a shipbuilder and artificer, fascinated by magitech-enhanced vessels. He’s an idealist who seeks to modernize the fleet and is eager to work with adventurers who bring new ideas or lost technology.
- Aryn Vellorien (Niece and Corsair Captain) – Officially a “private naval consultant,” Aryn leads a fleet of fast ships that eliminate piracy in Dominion waters—or enforce Vellorien dominance, depending on who you ask. She walks a fine line between hero and threat, and many suspect she knows of the family’s darker dealings.
Public Agenda
House Vellorien values discipline, duty, and control over chaos. They see themselves as the Dominion’s sea-bound bulwark, and look down on other nobles who “rot behind mountain walls” or “play politics inland.” Loyalty to house and harbor comes before anything.
Traits of the house include:
- Naval supremacy: Vellorien galleons, marked by their silver sails and reinforced hulls, are feared by pirates and respected by merchant captains.
- Pragmatic alliances: They will support anyone—merchant, noble, or adventurer—who protects Dominion waters or expands trade security.
- Port power: Half of Graepor’s port guard captains trace lineage or allegiance to House Vellorien.
