Chill Port
Nestled on the eastern coast of the North Blight, Chill Port stands as the confederacy’s most vulnerable city, cut off from the rest of its allies by the Snowveil Mountains and constantly under threat from the Snowcloak Dominion to the north. The town endures in defiance, fortified against both naval and land assaults while maintaining its vital role as a trade port linking the eastern seas to Gnorenori and Aeshethar.
Despite its military importance, Chill Port is a place of unease and paranoia. The ever-present fog rolling in from the sea gives it an eerie, dreamlike quality, masking ships, cloaking figures in shadow, and swallowing sound. Traders move cautiously through its streets, and its people are always watching the horizon—waiting for the Dominion’s inevitable advance.
Government
Chill Port is governed by a council of captains and trade magnates. The current council head, Mistress Erynn Vale, is a former privateer turned defender of the town, known for her unwavering stance against Snowcloak aggression.
Chill Port is an official member of the North Blight confederacy, though geographically separated. Chill Port is forced to send messengers through dangerous mountain passes to maintain contact.
Defences
- Dug into the Silvercliff Mountains, Chill Port has arrayed fortified watchposts serving as naval defenses against any Snowcloak assault from the north. If an attack is imminent, great signal fires light up, warning the town, giving the fog a fiery glow.
- The town hosts a small navy, consisting of fast, maneuverable warships built for ambushes and sudden strikes. Their black-painted hulls allow them to blend into the night and fog.
- A force of scouts and defenders patrol the coastline and nearby mountains, trained to navigate the mist and detect incoming threats before they strike.
- Some of the town’s harbor chains and breakwaters can be flooded and frozen solid, creating deadly ice barriers that can trap or wreck enemy ships.
Industry & Trade
- Goliath nomads frequently pass through the western lands, trading pelts, bone-carved tools, and runestone charms in exchange for metal weapons and supplies. While their presence is a welcome sight in town, they seldom linger, always following their sacred paths through the mountains.
- At night, with the fog at its thickest, an underground trade network known as the Ghost Market emerges in alleys and old warehouses. This is where smugglers, spies, and even Dominion deserters come to exchange secrets and goods away from prying eyes.
- Chill Port is a key point for ships traveling to and from Gnorenori, often acting as a restocking point for vessels heading west.
- Traders from Aeshethar bring shipments of fine metalwork, enchanted relics, and textiles to Chill Port, where they are distributed further north.
- The ever-present mist has led to the creation of vast fog catchers, large sails that collect water droplets for drinking and trade. In winter, ice is harvested from deep glacial caves and shipped to warmer lands for preservation and cooling.
- Chill Port relies on whale oil, blubber, and deep-sea fish to sustain itself. Their hunters venture into dangerous waters, competing with Snowcloak whalers for valuable hauls.
Guilds and Factions
Religion
- The Nameless One – A peculiar sect within Chill Port reveres an unnamed Divine figure, believed to walk within the mist, guiding lost souls. Many sailors offer prayers to this mysterious entity before setting out to sea.
- Frozen Pillars – Ancient, ice-covered standing stones near the cliffs are believed to predate even the oldest settlements. They are maintained by wandering Goliath mystics, who claim the stones are markers of an ancient path.
- Superstition & The Mist – The fog is both feared and respected; locals believe that whistling in the mist invites disaster, as the sound may awaken something lurking within it.
Tourism
The Fogfires
With the near-constant mist rolling in from the ocean, Chill Port’s people have a tradition of lighting Fogfires, great braziers and bonfires throughout the town. These fires ward off the gloom, but more importantly, they serve as social gathering points where families and friends meet, exchange news, and tell stories. Performers, poets, and musicians frequent these fires, turning them into impromptu nights of revelry—a sharp contrast to the otherwise somber atmosphere of the town.
The Midsummer Unveiling
Once a year, during the warmest part of summer, the winds shift, and for a single day, Chill Port is free of fog. The locals call this event the Midsummer Unveiling, marking it with outdoor feasts, games, and celebrations. It is a time for weddings, trade deals, and great decisions, as many believe the day of clarity grants true vision into the future.
