Void String

The glowing spirit of death.

"We had fallen through the Floor. Even survived it. By some chance we stopped falling and the ship's engine began to humm again. Then we spent a long time in the darkness, looking for a way up, any opening in the Floor. That's when I saw it. Glowing in the distance. It passed by us very slowly, draping over the ship like a cloth. I don't know what it was but when it touched Durin he fell over. No one ran to him until the creature had passed. I watched as it moved away, almost gracefully. Like a red string dancing through the darkness. Durin was dead."

The Curtain of Death

Found only in the Void, this long creature is one of the only things that can be seen in the complete darkness; its thin blue body and dangling red strings glow faintly. Very little is known about it as there has only been one sighting ever recorded, some doubt its existance.   If the one sighting is to be believed, the creature paralyzes any living thing it touches, killing it if it stays in contact with the victim long enough. It is said to be almost 150 meters long but the main body no wider than a rope. Some speculate that it glows in order to attract prey to it as it effortlessly floats along the slow air currents of the Void. How it stays aloft is also unknown, it is too heavy to just be carried by the wind and doesn't fly like a bird or an insect.

The Omen

When the crew of the skyship that sighted the void string first saw it, they thought - hoped - that it would lead them to a safe place to pass through the Floor above them and sailed toward it.   The crew was stunned by the beauty of the creature in the darkness and didn't think that it would harm the ship or the crew. Once the first crewman was touch as the being draped over the vessel, he collapsed instantly.   When it had left them, they said that it was a spirit of death and that it became one string longer every time it took a life. Now skysailors say that you should beware the lights of the Void or join the long procession of the dead.
