Ox Species in Linebound | World Anvil

Ox

Draft animal and symbol of the low.

"Greetings Matai. How goes the season?"   "It goes well enough. Though I fear Andel is on his last season."   "Your ox? He has served you well for many years."   "It will be a shame to end his life."   "Always is but it is better knowing nothing of him will go to waste."
To Pull and to Plow

The great strength of this four-legged bovine makes it an ideal candidate for pulling plows through the fields of Burim - and in recent years Grara as the farmers there have purchased some and brought them over. While they can be rowdy at times and especially when frightened, they have been domesticated since before the Time of Darkness and make great work animals.   In addition to plowing fields, they are good animals to move goods between the different districts of the Long City and between towns. This makes it a popular choice for farmers and also for merchants who cannot afford horses.

A Symbol of the Working Class

In Burim the ox is seen as lower than a horse. The wealthy refer to them as smelly and brutish - like the people that own them. The farmers and other laborers do not share this view of them because they value strength and endurance over appearance and prestige.   As tensions have risen between the upper and lower classes, the ox has become a symbol of unity among the poor. They display it on flags, blankets, clothes, even place carvings of them on their doors and walls.
