Koru

Large carniverous semi-domesticated bird of Kestatol.

"Don't mind them, they won't hurt you. Probably. They aren't used to seeing unscaled ones such as yourself."
— Akira, Rakrantran Chief

A Mutually Beneficial Relationship

For generations the people of Clan Esina have begun living closer and closer to the koru; not because the villages move closer to the birds but because the birds move closer to the villages. In the time before this koru was seen as just another meal for a hungry lizardfolk but now they are something between a wild animal and a domesticated one.   The koru - much like newly hatched lizardfolk - are a meal for the larger hunterbird but unlike the young lizardfolk the koru have a unique defense against the other birds. When a hunterbird - or flock of them - are detected, koru don't flee - they can't outrun this predator - instead they will form stacks of up to four koru to make themselves look larger in an attempt to scare off the hunterbird. They also begin a loud call to warn other nearby koru and increase the intimidation; unlike their usual vocalizations this one is unique and made of short, loud, repeated bursts of low-pitched squaks.   Clan Esina learned that the koru were so effective at keeping away hunterbirds that they stopped hunting them.
