Scalerot
The cause of kastreta is unknown but the symptoms are very clear. First the infected will become low energy, not enough to prevent mobility but enough to hinder strenuous activities. Next, it will become visible on their scales as patches of growing discolouration and the energy levels of the infected drop even further. Eventually the infected
lizardfolk in a slim majority of cases will die. The young are especially vulnerable and have a significantly higher chance of dying from scalerot.
While the initial causes of an outbreak are unclear, what is known is that kastreta can be passed from person to person. In small communal groups, this can easily lead to every member becoming infected. It is hard to watch loved ones suffer and harder still to watch them do it alone so usually those closest to the infected are the first to contract it through touch.
Treatment
The oldest known treatment for kastreta is a tea made from a select variety of herbs. This is the treatment traded to
Tsero during the
Time of Heroes and serves to alleviate the symptoms, allowing the body to more effectively battle the disease.
Since that time it has also become known that keeping the patient warm - warmer than usual - will aid in recovery. Laying on the warm sands during the dry season is easy but during the rainy season on
Kestatol, warmth has to be created by fire in a healer's tent or building.
Applying
shadowsap to the affected and surrounding scales both serves to help prevent the spread on the patient and from patient to others. It may also have some ability to fight the disease itself.
When combined, all of these methods increase the survival rate significantly and when combined with safe levels of isolation can make a huge difference in how many members of an afflicted community will survive.
